In the interests of harmony, Standard Operating Procedure in our house when the other is away is to clean before they get back.  The missus was working a trip and after the move the house was looking a little neglected so I spent hours sprucing everything up and doing loads of small DIY jobs that I had not yet gotten around to.  Jetlag makes one even more grumpy than usual.

So after brushing up the floor in the kitchen, being a lad and instead of using a dustpan and brush, I decided to use the vacuum cleaner.  2 biords with one stone, I vacuum the lounge and then suck up the pile of debris in the kitchen.  Easy.

Except that the vacuum was obviously p!$$ed off at this extra chore and decided to start spluttering sparks and smoke out the back!  So now the lounge was still unvacumed, the pile of debris needed to be scooped up, the house stinks of acrid smoke and there is a slight burn mark on the new carpet.  Joys!  Thankfully the missus was understanding and enough brownie points had been earned doing the other chores

So now I am in the market for a new vacuum.  Space is limited so I am tempted by these slim upright rechargable ones, there is a spot in the lounge I can hide it behind a door.  Anyone have this or similar and can provide feedback?  Budget is a little tight following the move as the solicitors, the bank and Ikea have swallowed most of the last 3 paycheques

Sounds like the motor brushes were 'life expired'.

My expereince of rechargeable ones are that they are not nearly as good as a full blown vaccum with powered brushes. Plus a quoted BOL of 20 mins vaccuming time is a bit short given a charge time of 16 hours.

That rechargeable looks very lightweight, ok for whipping off the wall if you drop a few crumbs, but for a whole house..I don't know.
You'd get a fairly decent upright for the same money.

When you consider the power consumption of a typical mains vacuum cleaner (granted that many are quite inefficient) it is clear that a battery powered one will be pretty poor.

There's a similar looking cordless vac in Costco at the moment that promises to turn the dust into neat little 'bricks' you can just tip into the bin.  Appealing vs. pulling wads of hair (you've met Amy, she has a lot of it! ), dust, dead crawlies, cat fur etc off the filter socket in the bucket vac or even emptying the Dyson (which usually ends up with the air looking like a dust cloud) - but I can't see it being very good for all the reasons stated.

How about a Roomba? Everyone loves a little robotic vacuum.. especially cats! (Personally I want one just to terrorise the kittens with.. )

Thought about it, if I lived in an appartment I would do it but as there are 2 floors (and thus either buy 2 or move it upstairs to clean too) I have looking at the cordless option.  The carpets are not very deep so it should be a viable option.

I've generally been a Numatic (pro version of Henry) fan, but I've also seen a Vax (upright) in action that in certain circumstances has performed better than our Numatic (mainly when lifting cat hairs).

What's your budget?

I have gone for the gtec airram from Costco as space was a significant factor.  First use suggests a decent purchase. Picked up a lot of dust and hair, more than I could see.  Most picked up on first pass as well.  Once fully charged I will give it a proper go.

We have one, its a real sucker. Really does the job well, but fitting attachments is fiddly.

The dc03 was the first and last dyson i bought.....caught fire too....a few months outside its warranty

No it was some generic german brand I got while I was stationned over there.  TBH it had lasted pretty well considering the abuse I gave it, but the burn marks on the carpet should eventually come out.
