Although this may be sh!te news to you, please bear in mind that in the big picture there's much worse that can happen.

Generally if you're out of your teenage years, you probably have type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 is either diet controlled, or via tablets, and to my mind is the more difficult one to live with.

I have type 1 (insulin injection type), and have had it for nearly 40 years, since i was 7.
My mother at the time thought her world had ended, but I'm still here now.   :P

Just make sure you look after yourself so you don't suffer any complications as you get older.   :y

Good luck with the nurse! (Its the oppsing dieticians I can't stand going to see).

If it's type 2 then it can almost certainly be controlled by diet.

My Father was diagnosed with it at 55. Mother then took their diet very seriously and he never had to take any medication at all.

30 years later he is still in good health, looks after his diet carefully and knows what to avoid.

All the best .........

Fingers crossed for you.  At least take heart from the fact that you have been diagnosed before anything serious happened :y

Type 1 is insulin dependant. ie you have to inject the insulin cause the body can't produce it.   :-[

Sorry to hear this news Emd, but if controlled well it is not too much of a problem.

I have type 2, which was common on my mothers side of the family, and I control it by insulin injections plus attempting to keep to a sugar free diet. I think there are always worse things in life that you can suffer from and in the 21st century diabetes can be controlled better than ever before. :y :y

However, you must check your blood sugar levels regularly at home, plus seeing the diabetic nurse every six months or so, with eye screening every year or six months.  Also if on insulin you must notify the DVLA and they will place you on a three year restricted licence with a medical check and correspondence with your doctor. ;) your insurance company should also be informed of the level of diabetes, and a restricted licence (DVLA aware) as necessary.

I've had Type 2 for some years now, and it's controlled by medication. However, I wish I had been made aware of the possible negative aspects of one of the tablets, Metformin: it had a deleterious effect on kidney function and mine is down to about 50%.
I have been taken off them now, but if you are offered Metformin as part of your treatment, do challenge your health care professionals and research the medication yourself, too.

bad news Emd..forget the f*ckin diets find a treadmill and RUNN ;D

joking aside,  its a serious problem.. have wide side effects , so you always have to monitor and keep your sugar level at some range..  high levels of sugar damages, arteries, kidneys, eyes, liver and etc etc.. and if drops more than enough you die simply..  so your first port of call is to decrease your insuline resistence.. exercise as much as you can..

it will feed all your organs , heart and liver being the most critical..

and agreed above, although metformin (included in many different name tables- glucophage is most known) is mostly prescribed, using for long term has many side effects..

exercise first and most definite solution.. until your heart stops on treadmill ;D

I'm sorry to hear this, Mr Emd, but as others have said, it's not all doom and gloom.

My sister's boy has it, and it doesn't  stop him from doing what he needs for an active and adventurous life.

Man mountain Steve Redgrave also has diabetes if I'm not mistaken....and just look what he has achieved.

My mother is type 1 and level swings from 3 to 23. They cannot get it under control with any consistency. Hence she is in a home - well that and a few other major issues. I don't know what aspect of her lifestyle created this - non smoker, non drinker but took no exercise for years due to hips packing up. Now diabetes is creating delays in having the hip operations.
