V6 Sports Mode volume II
« on: 09 January 2014, 19:06:13 »

Evening fellas, how are we?

I've been playing about with my Sports mode  8) 8) 8)

I've been reading this thread from a few years back relating to whether or not Sports mode actually works...

http://oldsite.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1281654811/45

I should mention that normally I drive very sedately  ::) but I've been thinking of late that there is a lack of oomph in 'normal' mode. When I kickdown in normal mode from a standing start the engine will take a sec, gird its loins, then shoot off. BUT it changes up somewhere around 4k RPM.

If I do this in Sports mode the throttle seems like its been changed and the car is very responsive, fast and will change up at the redline.

NOW. Reading the comments experts like DLK, KW, Lazyfekker etc have all said that there's absolutely no difference. Strange.

However, I have a possible theory....

As it is a learning ECU (mentioned in the above thread) is it likely that because I drive VERY slowly the car in normal use is slow (re-confirmed when TB drove my car once and mentioned ''it seemed a bit down on power'') and then when I pop it in to Sports mode it feels like a rocket......
Whereas knowing that the likes of TB drive, errr, ''spiritedly'' their ECUs have learned that and thus are fast in both modes.

Discuss.

I rarely use sports mode as I forget about it  :-[
When I remember though, I find it great fun and certainly different from standard  :)
As far as the technical aspect is concerned, I have no idea  :D

I thought in sports mode it stays in a lower gear for the same speed and changes up at somewhere near the red line. The engine isn't any more powerful, but throttle response is better because if you plant your foot it has to drop down less gears and you get more of the rev range to play with for longer.

Seems that way Webby. TB rekons the 2.5 and 3.0 don't show much improvement if the car is driven hard in normal mode. Iirc my old 2.5 had a noticeable difference, but that handled so badly and it was ine of my first cars, that it never really got used properly, and there no way of knowing which gear box update it had, if relevant.

Can't talk for the 2.6 but in the 3.2 there is a definite difference in performance with sport mode on.

Different ecu's. Can't say I noticed any difference with sport mode on driving the Rusty bullet 3.0 round Brackley a while back. Especially using sport mode to drop down a gear for engine braking. Nout happened. That would annoy me, I like sport mode for engine brEaking. ;)

So 3.2 yes, marked difference.
3.0 I guess it depends how its driven.

...although the 3.2 still "learns". :)

Pretty much think that sums it up mate.... but in terms of normal vs sport some people say it makes no difference. Mine definitely does and I wonder if its cos I normally drive like a fairy  :y

That's a good point, Chris... I'd forgot to mention the engine braking.

Why does an engine habe engine braking?  :-\ And any idea why in Sports mode is very perceptible?

most effective sports button is a manual shifter ;D and a shorter differential ..

yesterday I drove friends auto omega..  and the difference with mine was huge.. did I say I hate autos ;D

ps: I always drive mine like I stole it..  so ECU must have learned something..

Strangely enough, before xmas, was doing a 3 week stint at Battersea and back every day, same old journey through East London and back probably no more than averaging 12 mph on a painful stop start journey.

On the last week I tried an experiment as I was getting really shite MPG and drove the 3.2 with Sports Mode on and sometimes selecting 2nd gear for the slower part of thejouney. I actually achieved a better +3 MPG on average in the last week.  :)

Strange I know but put it down to less braking and using less fuel when slowing down in  heavy traffic.   :-\

;D That is true mate. Subjective though mate. I personally wouldn't ever drive a manual even if I had a license too. too much hassle changing gear

Suspect so n a roundabout way, I noticed in normal mode whilst coasting to a stop the engine still needs to tick over and using fuel, but using a lower gear mode would creep up to and sometimes hit 99 MPG on the Instantaneous, not by much but guessing over a painful 16 miles make a difference.

More likely due to the torque converter locking up  :)
