2.5 TD with AR35 problem
« on: 14 January 2014, 10:40:40 »

Went out this AM and as it was icy, so tried to select snow mode to check it for the coming winter. The light did not come on, and from then on the gearbox started playing up, together with 'Automatic gearbox' on the MID, I drove only about 6 miles to pick something up, and the whole time had various different indications. Ocsnly all the gearbox selector lights were on, and it seemed to be in limp mode most if not all of the time. I was only ably to select sport mode once in several tries. At no time have I got the snow mode light on, although I need to confirm that the bulb is working. The AR35 was fitted last summer and has worked fine since then, oil and filter replaced at the same time, and level checked, although I will now check it again.
This link from the old site sounds very like my problem, http://oldsite.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1293057474/45 so I hope that I have not got the same fault. If I have, could someone remind me where the gearbox ECU is fitted?

Try cleaning selector switch first before condemning the ECU Chris.

Yep, indication on the LEDs by the selector is independent of the ECU, so almost certainly the selector switch. :y

Thanks Rob & Kevin, I will clean the selector first and check the level. Is it worth trying spraying the selector with an appropriate contact cleaner before dismantling?
I'm still puzzled as to why it should go tits up as soon as I selected the snow button. I don't like coincidences. :-\
Where does the 'MID get its warning from?

Wrt the MID, I think it's from the engine ecu... when I fitted a 3.2 auto ecu to my manual, it put a Gearbox not connected message up on the MID :-\

Might also be worth checking the wiring to the Snow button in case it's shorting somewhere, given pressing it seems to have caused the upset :-\

Coincidence IMHO .. its been very wet and dirty the past few weeks, a good chance some water/crap etc has got into the selector switch. It was cold so possibly even some ice inside the selector switch to complicate matters. You selected the snow button first thing .. it probably would have played up even if you hadn't bothered ....

Just my useless guesses however    ;D ;D ;D

The MID has no diag connection to the engine ECU, only to the auto gearbox. I know that doesn't explain ALs observation, but I'd expect it to be the auto box that has flagged a warning on the MID (as it would, if the selector switch were causing the lights to dance around).

We just did a straight swap for the AR 25. No wiring alterations were required AIRC. Hopefully I'll get it up on stands this weekend to check the switch and the ATF level.

Any thoughts on trying an electrical spray of the switch before removing? :-\

Was trying to offer an explanation to Kevin for why mine put a gearbox error up :y

You're quite right that the AR25 and 35 are electrically identical :y

There pretty well sealed switch assemblies (there is a small breather tube) so getting at the contacts without removal and dissasembly is somewhat challenging.

having said that, there not to challenging to remove, open up and refit  :y

Thanks again, yes I thought I'd seen a guide, I am still hoping not to have to do it. The worst thing for me nowadays is actually getting it up on stands. Once up, not a problem. I guess I need better jacks. I really fancy one of those car lifts. :(
