How much do you love your pet?
« on: 14 January 2014, 17:52:40 »

I met a fella I know in the park today (don't) and his little wire haired terrier Buster. I remarked that I hadn't seen him for a few weeks and he told me why.
Buster was minding his own business outside his house when an American bulldog belonging to a neighbour escaped from the garden, ran across the road, grabbed Buster and shook him like a rag doll. It tore his stomach to bits.
Long story short: The vet said that he thought the best thing was to put Buster to sleep but his owner said no. £6,500 later and Buster is doing well. The owners bank balance, however, is not. He had to put it on his credit card and he reckons by the time he repays it will be nearer £8000. He is threatening to sue the owner of the bulldog but that could end up costing him more as Buster was not on a lead.

So......£8000.... That you really haven't got....would you?

Thats terrible story, but i would like to add before all the bad dogs storys start i have 4 staffordshire bull terriers and they are my world the most freindly dogs i've had its how there raised its like a police dog there raised to be aggressive so they are its up to the owners not the pet and all mine are micro chip. Plus had there bits of, plus have insurance so no bill is more than £60.

Yep , done it .
We had a Bengal and a Snow Leopard ( Cats ) and both succumbed to cancer . Both had expensive operations and treatments  in their last year in a private animal hospital which came to an eye watering sum.
Their replacements , another two Bengals, suffered a mystery illness immediatley after they had been neutered which was most likely caught by them in the filthy surgery that they had been treated in . They basically had intensive quarantined treatment for over two weeks for which we  received a bill that would have brought tears to two glass eyes........... One has since had another expensive  spell in the said animal hospital following complications from that initial " mystery " illness .
Our two latest  Siamese are so far " cheap to run " ...............most likely as they have never been near the first vet.
In truth when all monies spent are totaled that's probably why I'm still running an Omega ,but you know, I wouldn't have done it any other way. :)

Not for £8k i wouldnt....i love HollyDog to bits.....but £8k....

A few years ago i shelled out £1k when she got knocked down by a car...

She wasnt insured and hasnt been for many years...even with the £1k bill from the vets i was still better off than paying for pet insurance .... its a rip off....minor ailments are always under your excess....so you pay every time....

Doesn't pet insurance include public liability  :-\

And if the dog owner didn't have pet insurance, for that sort of money he should take him to court!  >:(

I think it must come down to the outcome and quality of life,if things look pretty hopeless then it's better to do the right thing and let a much loved pet go. I've had to make the decision a few to many times over my life and have hated myself for it every time. The money aspect does'nt really figure in a decision for me because if you have a good vet and I have always been guided by him and  if he says that the situation is hopeless then the decision in way has been made for you. sadly :(
