Ahhh that's better....
« on: 21 January 2014, 23:51:20 »

...finally got round to ordering some Ram from crucial, which arrived today, and just fitted it to my acer aspire one netbook tonight. Only broke one lug in the process. ::)

SOOOOO much better. As I'm sure you all know. Standard stuff really, but wanted to thank TB for his help with this machine, he knows why.

Cheers J.

Also, now the thing responds the right side of this week, I was able to sort the resolution issue that means check boxes can't be applied as the apply box is off the screen. There a magnify option in personalisation>display. Select smaller in the magnifier option and all is then the correct size. Even the icons don't look like something out of an old spectrum.

Its a delight to use. :)

Still, prefer typing on the iPad though. ;)

By the time my HP boots up I've forgotten what I switched it on for.  ;D ;D

Hence I always use the iPad.  :y

I am cooking on gas now with my HP Windows 8.1 desktop - 8mb ram and 2tb hard disc. I actually prefer the non touch screen version of Windows 8.1 as a desk top - but Lumia fine as touch screen of course.

The Windows button + X is a great feature to get to key functions if you get stuck.

No, but if you swap the HDD for an SSD then you'll really see an improvement in overall speed.

Yes TB mentioned this. At some expense and lost capacity?

While I'm sure there's further improvement to be had, its good enough for me and the use it gets ATM.

The improvement in speed is so improved with Ram that I have to say, I really do question the logic of fitting a 1 gig ram stick in a single slot, instead of a 2 gig at manufacture. What a waste of a load of chips in a 1 Ram stick for a start,  as the machine is so slow its not usable if two applications are running or opened at once, or an update or scan is running in the back ground, it's not fit for purpose.

For the few quid it would cost to buy in 2 gig instead of 1 gig chips surely the improved performance justifying the cost? Plus acers customers wouldn't be quite so aware of the shit build quality when taking the thing apart. ;D

Especially if the HDD has been dropped on a laminate floor... ::)

Yes, makes a massive difference if you can keep all applications in RAM rather than HDD paging. If you laptop uses shared memory for the display, then this always has a big effect on HDD performance as they both use DMA and the display will always have priority and take a fair percentage of the available bandwidth.

What ruins RAM more than dropping on the floor is touching without antistatic precautions ::)

An SSD will give a good boost in performance, but 120Gb will start at around £100, and prices roughly double as capacity does. SSD will also improve ruggedness and battery life.

Another option for screen estate on netbooks is to autohide task bar. If only using IE, full screen mode (F11 toggles it) may also help.

Acer. Wouldn't buy one myself. But you did get it cheap.

Indeed, it was cheap. :)
I'd be annoyed if I'd bought one at full price, which I nearly did at one stage.

Remember those clips that hold the key board in? Well the clips themselves are a separate minuscule moulding that clips in separately. Bit rubbish it seems to me. And one of the clips bust off the door on the back.

Doesn't seem to notice once rebuilt though. :)

Acer. 'nuf said.

I think when we stripped yours to double check RAM type, we stripped my HP netbook? I think it was probably about 10s to get to the RAM in the HP, and about 30m to get to same place in yours?  One is designed for maintenence, one is not really designed at all, and is a pain to wort on. Acer <spit>

But it was cheap, and fits your needs (almost) perfectly.

It's certainly a joy to use now.
