I've decided to sell my motorbike and put it on Gumtree and have a chap coming to see it this afternoon. 

The dilemma I have though is that 5 years ago I had a non fault prang on it and the other party's insurance paid me for the bike at a good valuation.    However I kept the bike and that seemed the end of it and I fixed it up and put it back on the road. 

The insurance company didn't send any paperwork categorising it ie making it a 'Cat D or C' so I've always assumed that it's clear, but now I'm selling it I'm not so sure.... 

Any thoughts?

Try phoning the Insurance Co and ask them, failing that spend £3 on one of those Text Check Services for an instant HPI or Cat result, 83600 rings a bell but do a google to see whats offered..

Text the word CAR or BIKE then a space followed by the registration number to 83600

If cat c or cat d since 2003, I think, needs a VIC check .. go to this site and see if it needs one ... if does .. then its a c or d .. if it doesn't .....

Enter Registration and Make .. then on the next page it will say, under the box, if a VIC check is required.

If the incident happened prior to the VIC check being needed then I don't know what you can do without contacting DVLA

It's been MOT'd since the accident, so if it needed a VIC check wouldn't they have told me I needed one then? 

I guess the HPI route isn't a bad idea...

VIC check has nowt to do with MOT, you'll need the VIC to get a new V5, that's all.

Ah OK.

I checked the DVLA site and from what I can see there is no VIC marker and states the vehicle is unlicenced and can be licenced.  Which is true as it's on a SORN which I renewed in November.

I've also tried the text check and it came back ' No DVLA or Police record found for ......... You have not been charged for this message.'

Not sure if that means it's clear or dosn't exist!!   

I'd have thought if it had been formally written off, the insurance company would have collected it with the documents.
