cam belt how much longer
« on: 25 January 2014, 20:45:48 »

Don't all shout at once ,have a 1996 1.8 escort bought it when it was 4 years old its is used most days and has never had a cam belt .It has been written off once bought back and repaired ,it gets to see the motor way/a road at least once a week in most ways has always been looked after but to be honest I have forgotten all about the belt, now it wont last that much longer and with the mig off the road I should look after her but there is a little voice inside me that says I wonder how much longer it will last.

That little voice must be really loud :o

Mind you how much is a new lump for one of those, and about half an hour to fit it ::)

I thought Zetec cam belts were 100,000 miles and 7 years, if memory serves? They are nothing like a prone to failure as the GM ones, at any rate. Easy to change although the cam cover has to come off to lock the cams in place. Got a locking kit somewhere IIRC. :-\

Cambelts are always a gamble in my opinion.  They can go on forever, or the bugger will give up on it's due date!!  :D

If you hadn't asked, would have lasted another five years.
Now you've asked - today, probably.

Didn't they have plastic rollers? My mondeo had plastic rollers and one decided to disintegrate on the motorway one day :)

Years ago I had a 1.4 Escort Van that bombed around the Country, apart from Plugs, leads, alternator and a handful of Oil and Battery changes it never broke down once, was up to about 300k millage when I called it a day, sold it back to Fords Research Team in the end for a dismantle.  :y
