Reffiting cams and sprockets on 2.2

Hi peeps,All seems to be going well so far,bit lost on refitting cam and sprockets. The book of lies states that sprockets should be set with no 1 cylinder lobes upwards and that timing marks on sprockets should be 4 teeth before tdc.Is this right if so wont it be difficult to return sprockets to tdc marks.Is it also ok to torque each cam without locking tool in place.Whats the best way to do this.Thanks for all your input so far, a biq learning experience!

Key things.

Crank at 90 deg before TDC so pistons are half way down/up the bores and considered 'safe' (e.g. the valves cant hit them).

Fit both cams and cam seals, torque up the cam cap bolts.

Fit the cam belt back plate (if removed)

Fit both cam pulleys (I recall the 2.0 and 2.2 state exhaust and inlet and have two possible positions of fit so be careful with that). There is a flat on the cam where you can use a spanner to hold the cam still whilst you torque the cam pully bolt up.

Now rotate the cams to the correct postion and fit the locking device.

Bring the crank to TDC and fit the blet as normal.

going to be having same issue soon. Is it safe to move the 2.2 to 90 before TDC with the head removed or would the piston liners move as per rover kettle series?

I have noticed on my FL 2.2 cams there is only 1 position the sprockets can fit on. There is a locater pin on each camshaft and each sprocket is keyed for one way fit only from what I can see! the only way you could fit them in a different position is to put the exhaust cam on the inlet sprocket and vice versa. I'm still having doubts about putting it all together as at TDC pistons 1 and 4 are at the top and all of the valves look about closed   ???

     Have just completed renewing my valve stem seals on my F/L 2.2. I made sure the Crankshate was turned 90degs anticlockwise so that 1 & 4 are away from TDC you will not contact the valves.
     You cannot fit the cams the wrong way round, they are not only clearly marked, EXH/INT  they have different designs to their centres.  Fit the cams, align the TDC marks on the cams , then lock with your cam lock then turn crank back clockwise to  TDC .    There is a recess on the crank, that lines up on a notch on the cam cover, so you do not have to refit the pulley to find TDC.

As per above.....crank 90 degrees BEFORE TDC.....then refit cams, then time cams, then bring to TDC
