BT infinity on it's way ???????
« on: 03 February 2014, 12:49:40 »

BT Openreach have started laying new cables through the village, they are pulling them between manholes. Also, a quite substantial green metal cabinet has arrived on the grass  verge just up the road. It's about 6 foot wide, 4 foot tall and 18" deep - would this be part of the infinity installation? I've only noticed one so far.

We are supposed to be getting it "between april & sept" - so I'm hoping that this is evidence of work towards that.

I would say yes, sounds like the right cabinet. :y
If it is, they'll stick a big sign on it proclaiming "Fibre optic"

No signs at all on it anywhere. I've had a Google images look and its the same cabinet style with equal width doors and a unique looking lock mechanism.

No signs yet, it'll appear, don't worry. It's like openreach's signature on their work.  ;D

A tentative welcome to the 21st century. :y

You'll have central heating, mains water and a cyborg olive-harvesting lackey next so you can put your feet up. ;D

Well two out of three isn't bad.

We have two log burners going now. It is rather snug despite us having the tail end of your weather fronts.
Mains water. We have that. Our village water company serves 72 houses with tested water.
Cyborg olive harvesting lackey.....mmm I was tempted to say Mrs V but nope. It still isn't too bad a way of spending a few weeks each year till we retire on the riches! ;D ;D ;D

Aye, sounds like a fibre cab. They do vary, but generally similar size to existing cab, except taller. Won't get the Superfast sticker until its lit up.

If they have only just fitted the cab, I'd say you're still 6-9 months off, unless your cab is the last on the exchange to be installed.

Fibre broadband will change your usage of the Internet. Cloud storage becomes viable, and streaming TV/Films is easy.

Thanks. I might wander around and see if any more have sprung up in recent weeks. But tell me, can you clarify what would happen if you are already close to the exchange - as I am. The new cabinet is about 300m in the opposite direction to the exchange - whereas the exchange is 500m the other way, with me in the "middleish" position. So I'm assuming that I am currently directly connected to the exchange (overhead line), so would that continue or would I be connected to the new cabinet? Home these ramblings make sense. Thanks ...........

It came to our village a couple of years ago, still fed to the house via a copper wire though....... ;) ;)

Just checked the BT web site and it seems I can have the BT infinity upto 76mb, same with my provider (Plusnet(owned by BT I believe))

Maybe time to upgrade, but is there anyway of finding out what speeds will actually be achieved before comiting.

The checkers should give an estimate, these are generally within 5Mb of reality,  assuming your copper cable isn't shagged, and your internal wiring is minimal.

For sync speed that is. Some ISPs molest the traffic in busy periods, which will affect things.
