Saloon rear screen wiper.
« on: 05 February 2014, 21:35:16 »

Has anyone ever fitted a rear screen wiper to a facelift saloon? I'm guessing it wouldn't be easy, but although the internal demister is fine, I find the need to see through the external moisture. Is this a crazy project?

Its certainly not going to be an easy project. I'm guessing (ignoring 1990s Orion Ghias) the reason manufacturers don't do it are:

1) saloon rear screens don't get dirty, thus don't need cleaning
2) the shape of the screen makes it unreliable/ineffective (or impossible)

I use the HRW to clear the rain off mine. Invariably the mirrors need the raindrops heated off if setting off, or have been sat in traffic in the rain. My HRW gets a lot of use ;D

There were far worse things fitted to a MK5 Escort Orion  :y

An estate tailgate wiper could probably be made to work with some tweaking of the parcel shelf and (very) careful drilling of the rear window...

Yes!  ::) ::)
Saloons don't need a rear wiper for the reasons given by Jamie  ;)

I was ignoring the logistics of mounting a motor and getting the shaft through the glass. I think more fundamentally you won't be able to get the wiper to sweep the glass well enough.

To be honest, the estate ones aren't great :-\

Tends to miss the top of the glass...  ...and thats on a relatively flatish piece of glass. The curved saloon glass, nah...   :-\

The tailgate glass is deceptively dished...

Hmm, thanks gents - I never expected it to be easy! But my rear window DOES need clearing mechanically as the HRW is not up to the job. I can't remember what car it was that I had in the past, but luxury of luxuries, it had heating, washer and wiper!

Some European Police Volvo S60's had a rear wiper fitted. The S60 didn't come with one standard, and does look rather odd with one fitted...maybe you just need a new rear screen with fully working elements, and some rain-x?

That's certainly one way to avoid drilling the glass ;D
