Is my engine worth anything?
« on: 14 February 2014, 20:42:14 »

Keeping hold of it just in case I buy a car which needs one. But want to know if it is worth anything.

Y26SE
3.0 cams & divider
ported inlet tracts
Only 164,000 miles
Oil cooler, thermostat in 2009

Car was not far off 3.0 performance it could beat 8 seconds to 60.

In a word no but you might get a couple of quid for the cams and exhaust manifolds

How much do these engines weigh roughly?

Contemplating looking for a scrap engine to learn on. Not being a mechanic and not much space whilst in the car, would love the opportunity to "play" with one.

If its out of the car and you've got the space (and a little time) it would be pretty easy to do a full recon.  Got to be worth a few quid then.  ...I'm full of great ideas I know... Maybe Black Viper's the man for the job.

At that mileage a proper recon would cost way more that you'd ever sell it for, IMHO.

As said, cams are worth something, possibly the heads if someone happens to have a cam belt failure, coil packs are a frequent failure, hence worth something second hand. Then you're really struggling to find any value in what's left. As a complete engine with that mileage, even less IMHO.

Even now they're this old, Omegas rarely die due to engine failure, hence nobody is in the market for a complete engine, and if they were, I'd wager they'd find something with less miles quite easily. :-\

Point taken Kevin.  I would have thought though that, assuming the periferals were reusable, that a good eneral strip down, cleaning and rebuilding with new seals, apart from the labour element cost wouldn't be that great.  If reconned thoroughly, is mileage of any significance?  I'll bow to your knowledge.

All the best,

Martin

Depends how far you're going to go, really. In my books, if you're going to sell it as a refurbished engine you're looking to restore it to as close to "as new" as makes no difference. At 160k miles that will mean a complete set of gaskets and seals, lapping the valves in, cleaning all the tappets and possibly replacing some, piston rings and either a hone or rebore with oversize pistons and possibly bearings and a polished crank.

Then you've got the convince a buyer that you've done all the above and done it well.

If you're not going to go that far, it may well stay together as Ellesmere port assembled it, IMHO.

Agreed, but then you'd be mad not to bide your time for a 3.2. :-\

Same (considerable) weight and cost, bags more power. :y

As others have suggested, the cams are probably worth more that the entire engine.

Anyone looking to replace and engine for performance reasons will shove in a 3.2, as its more powerful, and delivers the power better than a 2.5/2.6 with 3l cams.

Anyone wanting an unfettled replacement engine due to failure will want one not messed around with, and lower mileage.
