Just booked flights to Dublin next week, unfortunately attending our second funeral of the week

Cost for a pair of tickets return £412, fine I thought. Expensive, but needs must. Humm car, need one of those as we will be travelling around a bit. Last time I used Enterprise, but this time thought I would give BA's Avis a go.

Click through (on BA's site), pick a car (Group K - Insignia), for a total 3 and a bit days, grand total it says, including flights, £411

Eh?? It went down?

Carried on expecting it to bump up the price at some point, but nope, all confirmed. Very odd, but got a booking car ref, so shall see!

Ah yes no Ryan Air and a Corsa for our Tunnie!  Maybe it's gone down as a research trip and Uncle Roop is paying.

iirc they show the 'This is what it should cost' price first then the 'This is what it will cost/save you price'.

The idea being to reinforce the notion that you really do save money by booking together.

I'd wager that if you added 3 nights in a hotel to the booking it would become cheaper still, relatively speaking

If you're going to the west coast, around Wednesday, then take plenty of weatherproof clothes...

@Guffers - Tell me about it, it's the days we have to fly at short notice.

1) I refuse point blank to fly RyanAir, paid £0.01 for one of their flights once. (inc all taxes/charges) - I would never pay more than this!

2) AerLingus was close, until I realised the price I saw was without bags

3) BA were cheapest, for checked bags from Heathrow.

4) Easyjet ect, no good for us, Heathrow is actually very easy, even more so if we stay in Kingston night before


@ Sir Tigger - Thanks. Both myself and MrsT shall be attending both our grandfathers funeral in the same week - Both of us were very close to our grandparents, so going to be tough.

@Al - The price it showed was 'all in'

It showed the total price of the flights, inc taxes, charges ect. It then said, do you want car hire? It listed a few car options, all cheaper (showing total, all in price) than the total of the flights previously.

Clicked through, each car, from a shitbox Micra to Premium was listed as the same price, so I suspect a site error?

Total amount debited, was less than the total flight cost. It confirms the car hire during the period we are there, all in. No extra charges mentioned. (expect extra insurance collision ect)

Staying around the Dublin area, but no doubt need water proofs anyway!

Well, I was hoping for an Insignia, but no, I got this heap of junk 

I would have complained, but they did give me £1 for it, rather than charging me for the car. Good job too 








Do the French have small feet? The pedals were so close together. There was a foot rest for left foot, combined with a deeper section for clutch to go. Trouble was my foot kept hitting the side of the rest as I pressed it, so my foot was at an angle or hitting the brake as well. Or both 

The auto lights also did not turn on when I felt they should (and every other driver that morning)







Ironic it had about 10 diesel stickers all over the place, you would need to be devoid of hearing and basic senses to know it was not a diesel

Only nice feature was a 'Speed Limiter' it had cruise, but you could also set a max speed, which it would never go over, unless you pressed really hard. Kinda useful I guess

Base spec Renaults really are, well, base! But the best ones to have, as French and electricity do not mix well.

I have the same trouble with the pedals in FIL's Laguna shitheap. Urgh!

A lot of modern family cars have a speed limiter now. Beemers have had that annoying bleeper for well over 15yrs, although not quite the same thing, but trying to achieve the same result.

This was near the handbrake, quite easy to reach really.

You have to scroll through several menus on the headunit to get to the speed limiter on the E46 M3 .. definitely not intuitive or something you want to mess with while driving! Thankfully the cruise is right there on the wheel where you want it (better than the Omega sticking it on the end of a wobbly stalk IMHO).

Thanks for kind words all, sadly our 2 recent trips to Dublin have been for funerals. I've said to MrsT we must go back under happier circumstances, I'd like to actually get out and see the mainland.

I never knew my dad's parents, but was very close to mum's, and my step granddad after my real granddad died when I was a nipper. I can imagine your hurt. If there is anything I can do for either you, MrsT or your Mum, who I'm sure is equally devastated, you have my number.

Its a cliché, but time does heel. Most of the time, it makes you happier, and you cherish their memories. None of my grandparents saw the new millennium, and my dad only made it by a few months.  However, Mrs TB often catches me smiling or smirking, and asks why, "Just thinking of Dad/Bill/Grandma"

However, I suspect there'll be a tear or 2 whilst the rawness of it is still there. Keep an eye on Mrs T as well, for obvious reasons.
