I have just about got used to all the vagaries of "printing" on normal home printers (no black ink, no yellow ink ,nozzle check required, clean print heads, do you wish to continue, paper jam, unable to print as there is an R in the month etc etc).

I wonder what joys 3D printing will hold for us when we have logged onto the Opel website, put in and had rejected our trade club card membership number, found the part we need to buy (we will say heaterbypass valve for an Omega) , paid for ONE end product and pressed print button ...............

Good 3D printing is further off than is being reported, naff 3D printing is pretty close though.

I have used two or three high end industrial ones and they are realy only good enough for space models and low quality prototypes (as what comes out lacks strength and definition).

Plus its a right royal pain in the arse to remove the filler/support material.

It'll come, but in order to really come good, we'll have to go through a few years of consumers playing with them, so naff is where its gonna be for the next few years.

As to say, even the naff ones have advantages for some applications, but we're miles off the Daily Fail's sensation of working firearms for example.

Depending on your definition of 'working' it's been done and is on video more than once  Sure, the 'guns' will only fire once, which puts it in the same league as the kind of 'guns' inmates fashion in prison (so I'm told! ) but if you're close enough to the target who needs more than one shot..

Though you could just as easily make something to do the same job out of a length of steel tube and a nail, pretty much..

I don't recall seeing any hands blown off If you google the 3D printed 'Liberator' there's plenty of test firing videos with no hands lost..

There's also a company (I just found) producing a 3D printed metal gun, which I assume is a fully working handgun.

3d is awfully cheap for a printer - you could get 4 for a shilling and 80 for a pound.
