I have a joist finder here you can borrow, it also does metal.  But I have noticed that when looking for wood it also gets set off by insulation (which I guess is either woodbased or displays a similar signature) which is not very helpful.

Cheers, as your place is around similar age to mine I'd suspect they are similar in build?

Yup.  Where there are internal walls there should be joist and noggin spaced at 600mm from the outer wall inside edge :y
