Work done yesterday.
« on: 07 March 2014, 11:03:52 »

Exhaust manifold was blowing so started to investigate, removed heat shield, no cracks or signs of problems. But 7 of the 10 studs were loose, all re-tightened. Checked down pipe , took off 4 bolts , gasket showing soot where it was blowing, and 1 bolt had 2 locking washers where it was blowing. Installed new gasket and bolts job done total cost so far £8. £3.50 for bolts £4.50 for gasket.

Next job cam belt and water pump. Purchased GM parts online, Cam belt kit , belt, tensioner, pulley's £45, water pump, Continental £16.
Fitting the belt was no problem with the locking mechanism in place. Water pump removal was a right pig, think it was the original, it was full of corrosion around the rubber seal. That's the oily bits done. Next down to the local mechanics to sort out the tracking, two front tires badly worn on the insides . Two new tires £54 each, tracking £35. All in all a busy day.

Bit more info about my car, It is a 1997 Omega 2.0 16v. The previous owner was an elderly gent , Last 4 mot certs show he only did 3500 miles in it in the last 4 years. She now has 83,000 miles and is in excellent condition, bar the usual rust spots on rear doors. Just thought I would share this with you all.   :y

A word of advice on the manifold and to avoid future issues.

Its worth removing it and getting the manifolds head face flat (belt sander works well).

Then fit new studs and put the studs in first.

Then fit the manifold.

dont bother with local place for the tracking, pound to a penny that it needs full geo set up and only that can be done properly at WIM at chesham. wear to the inside is camber out of spec.
