Why do people let tyre places use clip on weights on their alloys? It damages the paint and allows crappy salty water to sit under the weight and eat into the paint/alloy

Forgive my ignorance, but what should they use instead of clip-on weights on alloys?

Ron.

Stick on, on the inside of the rim - out of sight. If you look on various newer rims, there isn't a lip for a clip-on weight anyway.

Stick on behind spokes. If that doesn't work out, refit tyre correctly so weights are hidden

You'd be surprised just how many wheels are badly buckled and need lots of weights all over the place. A good tyre fitter will mention this to you. Many don't, so you can't say when the damage might have occured. They're gambling on the simple fact that most people have absolutely no idea what is involved in balancing a wheel properly.
