Possible Head Gasket problem
« on: 13 March 2014, 18:03:46 »

Hi All

I am having an issue with my Omega.
When I stop at lights or after a long run there is smoke/steam rising from under the bonnet and is getting worse.
I also have an oil leak and am using a litre of oil every three weeks or so but I am not sure where the leak is. The engine is covered in oil though much of this was there when I bought the car in November

Could the two issues be related ?
Where would be the best place to get it checked out.
I live in Corby, Northants

Any pointers would be greatly received

Regards

sounds like your cam cover gaskets have gone big time, smoke will rise from the exhaust manifolds where its burning off. also your sparkplug holes will be full off oil.  ;)
oh what engine?  :y

It's probably the cam-cover gaskets, but you can easily eliminate the probably.
Buy yourself a spray bottle of cheap degreaser, and use it everywhere you can easily reach from the cam-covers down. Be sparing with it everywhere you see wiring or connections. Do this with the engine cold! Once the degreaser has had a chance to work, gently hose it off; a pressure washer isn't really necessary. Take the car for a reasonable run, and check what is now oily. A mirror will help for checking under the scuttle and around the back of the heads, don't expect to see much this is a really crowded area.

i would say yes, keep your eye on the oil level though. worst that could happen is oil ignighting from the heat of the exhaust manifold. needs fixing & breathers cleaning out tbh.
