Why do we have to pay for "Freephone" on Mobiles

why should we pay for"freephone" calls even if you have got a contract phone with included minutes the cost is added on top and not taken out of these minutes, this also includes 0845 "low cost" calls....... is this just another way to con mobile phone users more and more numbers are "freephone" 0800 numbers

Simple answer is you dont..... :)

Not sure but i believe it was o2 i was with PAYG and if you omitted the 0 from 0800 then it was actually free....saying that might have been vodafone.

But anyway point is not all networks charge for 0800 or at least didnt....with Virgin now some policies may have changed.

If i ring them from my Orange contract they charge me, which p's me off, because if i had to ring the RAC, because i'd broken down.
At one time there was no charge, but like everyone else they all just wana make money.
Maybe the breakdown services should have a 01 # like the rest of us. As for removing the 0 from 0800, i didn't know you could  :-?

Wasnt cellnet....wasnt THAT long ago  ;D

I know for a fact it was free as a recorded message used to play saying you"ll be charged please redial omitting the 0....cant remember excatly wording however it was certainly free 100% guaranteed. :y

Just cant remember if it was o2 or Vodafone....only used then two for years until Virgin.

Yes, that was the Cellnet/o2 msg - basically, you're gonna get charged, redial dropping the 0 to accept this.

the reason is very simple.....

when you use a 0800 number you are still using the network, sometime ago calling card services (they allowed cheaper calls abroad) were advertised heavily, so people were using the mobile networks free of charge to call people in other countries.
In addition a lot of companies started using 0800 numbers for their services before long the mobile companies were losing money given the amount of usage that was being created by 0800 numbers  

so they started to charge for 0800 numbers, the problem was it was never communicated very well

Thanks everyone for joining in so far I feel quite strongly on this one I see what was meant by the mobile calls to overseas problem but is that the truth or just an excuse to rip us all off, I think we all pay enough for the service we receive and if they can grab a bit more they will .... perhaps I'm just an old bitter tight git, but don't like people stealing from me!!

 Its a shame that the minority, by greed, has spoilt it for the majority the only solution seems to be that companys who offer freephone numbers should always offer a 01, 02, or 07 number as well

 Its a shame that the minority, by greed, has spoilt it for the majority the only solution seems to be that companys who offer freephone numbers should always offer a 01, 02, or 07 number as well

Particularly the Breakdown companies, you could be broken down with little or no credit, well for those on payg :)

With 22 people taking the vote so far and 6 replies, It would be interesting to hear from the four who voted that they believe it is correct to charge us for a mobile "freephone" call How can this be correct?
