I don't have problem with smoking and non smoking areas in pubs and restaurants, as long as there are both, so we have a choice to be in a smoke free environment or not. Even with smoke purification systems in my local club, in the days of smoking, you and your clothes smelt like an ashtray the next day and ceilings and paintwork went yellow from the tar very quickly.

With e-cigs, it is an unregulated market with many having suspect and dangerous chemicals. The only reports on them being safe on the passive smoking front that I have seen, is reports from the e-cig manufacturers themselves. I will await to see independent long term reports on their safety.

Paints have had to be reformulated due to the dangers of VOCs, which damage your DNA, cause birth defects etc., what many people don't realise is that these compounds can be in air fresheners and scented candles.  :o :o :o

Best not to talk about the safe level for microwave signals.  ::) ::) ::)

Knowing nowt about the safety/passive risks etc etc of these e-things I will simply put this POV ....

Having sat in a restaurant with a "gentleman" (loose description) at the next table proudly demonstrating his latest "toy" and loudly proclaiming that no-one could stop him, we had to suffer voluminous clouds of licorice smelling "steam" (vapours ??) as he exercised his "rights" ...

Now, it might be old-fashioned ... but IMHO he demanded consideration of HIS rights .. but gave no consideration to anyone else who wanted to eat in a nice, clean, non-smelly atmosphere... and consideration of others is all it takes ...

If he wants to smoke those things (or VAP as I believe its called) .. fine .. but do it outside with the smokers .. be considerate of others ..

I saw the retard on TV yesterday, one of the reasons he gave for the ban was they could encourage people to take up smoking real ciggies.

I suspect that if the smoking ban was repealed, even smokers would quickly realise that pubs, clubs and restaurants are much more pleasant places to be these days than in the days of yore.  ;)

You're not wrong... the effect was almost instantaneous  :-\

The weather that summer didn't help, but by the time the recession kicked in that was it. Anywhere that didn't do decent food was basically fooked...

On the other hand, the pubs that do do food are now busier, IMHO. They have attracted customers who wouldn't go to a pub before due to the smoke. Most people don't want to have a nice meal in a smoking environment. :-\

Meanwhile, the former inhabitants of "sports pubs" no doubt sit watching the footie, smoking and drinking in their living rooms with their young kids. ::)

I think a ban for outlets serving food would have been better, or the possibility of a separate smoking room. On the whole, though, I think pubs are now much nicer places to be.

With a bit more freedom, pubs could have consciously chosen to be smoking or non smoking, and punters would have equally had the freedom to choose either or :-\ Smoking pubs with gardens could also offer table service, making them more appealing to non smokers...

But factor in the price of drink, and it's easy to see why people buy 40 cans for a quid from Tescos etc, have a few mates round for the big footy matches and all chip in for a curry rather than going out to watch things. Even if matches are on pay per view they're still quids in :-\

Before the Government made a total ban on smoking in pubs, there used to be one smoke free pun in Bury ....... that was the pub that nobody - somker or not - used
