As Marks DTM suggests, if its leaking when climate set to HI (for eg), try it with climate set to LO, or vice versa.  This usually points to HBV, about £30+VAT from dealer, trade, although avoid the scumbags at Crownhill (V4, between H5 and H4).  I'm told a new dealer has recently opened at Kingston, near the BP, on the way to the M1 Jnc 13. No idea if its Crownhill moving, or a separate dealership.

I'm in Brackley, on the Bucks/Northants/Oxon border if you need a 2nd opinion, or help.

will try in morning hard day need to sit down thanks :y

You'll most likely find it all escapes at one temperature setting. Try a different temp each day until it leaks...

The only consistency with HBV failure is that the temp is always different ::)

Symptoms are typical of HBV.

I would buy a new HBV anyway so that it is in the car ready to fit when the old one fails completely.

Had a gander at this today, although buggered if I could get it to leak, using the modified cap and pressurising to about 10psi method  :-\

Valley is bone dry, no hint of leak from stat, cooler plate, bridge, HG (to outside of block). Good job there, Mr DTM :y

Bits of radiator that are visible all looked good, as did rad hoses. Curly hose from bridge to HBV looks good.

Tell tale signs ("rusty" look) of a leak around HBV, which would fit in with brian36's diagnosis of where he's seem coolant under car, and with his observations with the climate settings within the car.

Disappointing I couldn't 100% prove the leak, but given what I've seen, the HBV is what I would do :)
