We all know what the manufacturer claims for this delightful old 'dowager'. Let's explore the reality.

LOCATION.........Perfectly flat 'private facility'. Santa Pod.

CONDITIONS......Virtually windless.  Fourteen stone driver  and half a tank of fuel.

TEST EQUIPMENT....Racelogic Performance box.........accurate to within 0.1 MPH (SPEED)
                                                                                                 0.1 SEC  (TIME)
                                                                                                 4 CM over 400 metres (DISTANCE)



So..............10 MPH.....0.71 sec........1.88 metres

                 20 MPH.....1.77 sec..........9.13 metres

                 30 MPH.....3.12 sec.........24.27 metres

                 40 MPH.....4.52 sec.........46.17 metres

                 50 MPH.....6.36 sec..........83.36 metres

                 60 MPH ....8.53 sec..........136.90 metres

                 70 MPH.....11.00 sec.........208.94 metres

                 80 MPH......14.42 sec.........323.86 metres

                 90 MPH......18.38 sec.........474.62 metres

                100 MPH......23.23 sec.........680.99 metres


Standing quarter mile 16.54 sec at 85.54 MPH.

That's a very tidy 0-60 time for a 2.6 auto,slight downhill perchance

0-60mph looks quicker than book figures. Isn't it 9 or 9.5 for the 2.6?

Mildly tweaked mk1 3.0l just breaks into the 15s. Sometimes!

A friend's road legal Fiat 126 is now running very low 9s!

Those Omega stats are pretty good figures for a heavy, smallish engined car

0-60mph looks quicker than book figures. Isn't it 9 or 9.5 for the 2.6?

Most magazine's test 'two up'  with a full tank of fuel, adding perhaps a further 100/150 Kg to the weight. This could make the difference.

They cheat by using the 'one foot rollout'  facility....

This knocks about 0.3sec off the elapsed time.

Never needed to; just held it at 3000rpm and fed in the clutch on the green light. 6500 rpm changes into 2nd and 3rd gears, change into 4th at 7000 as you cross the finish line, brake hard and take the first return road. My mate's technique of dropping the clutch at 6000rpm yielded the same times, but I couldn't see the point of being so brutal.
 Repeat as often as you can. We put 21.runs on my daily driver one Sunday.

By comparison my CLS 500 manged 14.2 sec for the quarter at 101.8 MPH.

5.6 to sixty and 14 dead to 100 MPH*.

 Low nines.... Strewth !!!.... that is quicker than a Hayabusa or ZZR 1400. I'm guessing that this particular Fiat 126 doesn't have it's original twin cylinder air-cooled 30 BHP engine.
