Please help me read my multimeter
« on: 11 April 2014, 11:06:59 »

Hi guys hope you're well.

I am having a complete mental block :(

Just measured the resistance of a sensor (non-omega) and on the lowest (200ohms scale) it read 01.1

Is this 1.1ohms? or 110ohms?

Depends whether its anolog or digital, digital should always read out true, anolog you need to work out compared to the scale readings and what range you are on.

Probably 1.1 ohms. Many coil type sensors will give a very low reading like this. Worth checking the resistance from the sensor terminals to the case (if it's metal). Things like abs wheel sensors thypically have low-ish resistance between the two electrical terminals, but near infinate resistance from the terminals to case. So you can measure the correct resistance between terminals but still be faulty if there is a short from the terminals to the case.

Thanks boys. Yeah, it's a power steering pressure switch so it has a big metal casing body. Thanks very much  :y

Do you have a little adjuster/wheel on your meter to balance out the lead resistance? If so, short the test probes together and turn the wheel until the meter reads zero and you will have the true reading of the item you are measuring.
But yes, I concur - 1.1 ohms as read, with lead resistance.

Those leads are shit then :o. 0.5 ohms, I assume measured by the meter itself?

I reckon Mr Webbybear isnt pressing the probes hard enough together......just tried it on my meter.....lightly tough the probes together....meter says 0.4 ohms ..... press a tad harder.....then it says 0.0  :y
