Oh, running Vista.

I know it`s an 'old chestnut' Mike; but, have you shut it down fully and rebooted since it went pear shaped?
Sometimes a 'reboot' can work wonders.....it often does for my Vista machine here :y

install firefox?

could be a winsock error

check what IP address you have and make sure its connecting to the router.

power off modem and router and PC then boot in this order:

Modem. once finshed powering up start the router.
and finally once the router has completed power the pc on.

Internet itself is fine, our desktop is plugged in and connecting fine. :(

Assuming its xp or vista with internet explorer you are using.  Open internet explorer, click the tools tab, then internet options, then connections, then lan settings - make sure the automatically detect settings box is checked then click ok and ok.  Close internet explorer then re-open and with any luck you should be back in business.

If that doesn't work reset the router and retry these steps.

System Restore

There was a big Microsoft update this week for Windows XP that included an Internet Explorer 7 fix. This might have been updated for Vista users too.

If so, a couple of possibilities (not exclusive) are raised:

1/ The update to Internet Explorer 7 hosed it (IE7).

2/ The update to Internet Explorer 7 worked fine but in doing so changed the program. If you run a software firewall it might be set to block changed programs, resulting in lack of access.

Both these scenarios would be "fixed" by system restore, but your system will be unpatched and therefore potentially unsecured.
