Microbore heating question
« on: 18 May 2014, 09:29:42 »

I have microbore pipework for the central heating.

Ive noticed i have a leak where the pipe goes into a TRV.

Ive tried tightening it up, but its still leaking at that point.

Im draining the system down at the moment....

But i dont know what im faced with? Will it need a new TRV? or will taking off the TRV and cleaning it up and refitting do the job? Do you get TRV's for microbore? or are they all 15mm with an adaptor for microbore?

Any ideas appreciated....

Yes you can get TRV's for mircrobore (10mm?), but try cleaning it up and use some PTFE tape on the threads when you reassemble.  :)

Has the pipe been knocked or anything?  :-\

Now ive got it apart, i can see whats going on.....its a 15mm TRV , with a microbore to 15mm adaptor soldered on the pipe, which is actually the problem, it not soldered anymore,, it  just spins around  :( and wont come off either  :(

Maybe i should cut the pipe (theres quite a bit of play of pipework where it comes out of floorboards) and buy a microbore TRV  :-\

That seems the best option, cut of adaptor, you an also get 15-10 inserts instead of changing valve  :y

Wickes in Swindon, dont have them in stock.....so as i need to get this fixed today, or else no hot water in the morning, I bought the only 8mm fitting that was any good.....8mm standard rad valve...and i'll do away with the TRV for now....it can always be replaced at a later date  :y

Probably too late now but if it was soldered before I would have resoldered the joint using the existing fittings.

The inserts usually have a weak centre section that collapses and grips the microbore pipe. The microbore pipe is very soft so if the insert rotates on the pipe it will probably chew a groove in the pipe which will then leak.

If i had a blowtorch then i might of attempted that idea.....but as i havent, a £1 wasted on a 10-15 converter (should have been 8-15) and then about £3.50 on a 8mm rad valve seemed the best way to go ( i did look to see if Wickes had 8mm TRV's but they only has 15mm ones)

All done now.....and leak free again now  :y

Thanks for the advice peeps  :)
