Well! So who did do it then ???
« on: 19 May 2014, 19:14:04 »

Just watching the local news and once again (grooooaaan) immigration is the main topic. What is really getting to pee me off is the standard chant of so many immigrants.. 'We will do the work the English won't do'.. When, oh when will someone ask.. 'So who the bl**dy hell did it before you came then'???  >:(

Sadly, in many cases, its true. Previous governments have made it easy for the lazy to earn a good wage by being sat on their fat arses doing nothing.

Cut the benefits of those capable so they don't sit at home, maybe then we can counter that argument.

While I agree with your point TB. Those jobs didn't just appear 2 years ago, someone has done them over the years. But as I'm sure after reading many posts on here, its a matter of, 'I aint bl**dy doing that for that wage'.

The NHS is one of the largest employers of immigrants in the country - not just nurses & doctors who are relatively well paid - but cleaners/porters/etc etc ... and I know from speaking to friends that it would not matter how many of them left, the local unemployed would simply not do the job .. and not just because of the wages .. but many folk seem to think that such work is "beneath them" .. but are the first to moan when "someone" doesn't do it.

Many immigrants do have something that a lot of UK "nationals" seem to be lacking ... it is called doing a days work for a days pay .. or what used to be referred to as a "work ethic" .. and not expecting a weeks wages for half a day of drinking coffee/smoking/texting etc etc

Take aircraft cleaning...

'95 starting wage at Gatwick was £3.65ph... by '99 it was upto £5.80.

9/11 nearly caused a recession in the aviation industry.

'04 and wages were still at £6.00. Polish agency staff started to appear at £5.00, living upto ten in a house.
'06 wages were still £6.00, but half the staff were Polish agency, still on £5.00, but with permanent contracts.

Company folded in 2007.

Fast forward to 2014...

I used to be a truck driver and worked for a largish haulage company that had a couple of contracts with the supermarkets, so I was regularly in and out of the big distribution centres.  Pre 2004 all the workers in these places were locals, yet by 2006 they were almost all Eastern Europeans.

There is a big Sainsbury's regional distribution centre just out side of Bristol and I used to go in there nearly every day and got to know a few of the lads there.  The work was mind numbing, but they were well looked after by Sainsbury's, had long term contracts with good pay and conditions, however after 2004 when their contracts ran out they were offered far inferior terms and most left to be replaced by Eastern Europeans who were happy to work on zero hours contracts at minimum wage or not much more.

This was a common scenario in all of the supermarket distribution centres that I visited.....

It's no wonder people are so disillusioned, especially the young...

They have no interest in the future simply because they don't see one :'(

We are currently recruiting for a senior iOS developer, salary is around £65k

So far two best candidates are a Spanish chap and Lithuanian. The latter should be joining us, we had a couple of locals, but not up to scratch.

He will join our other senior dev, a French guy  ::)

Many of the people who like to live the high life on benefits would not pass the necessary security checks / tests etc for these Jobs.............. :-X :-X

I know the place!  :y  I think they closed it after they opened a massive depot at Waltham Abbey off the M25.  :-\

In the same boat, just taken on board a foreigner because nobody here has the skillset

So how are people supposed to develop if companies just employ foreigners all the time.  Take the NHS for example, where they employ thousands of foreign nurses, because it's cheaper than training British youngsters.  :(

Their nationality to us is not important, it's their work history. We are after a senior dev, we cannot take on someone to develop. Sky do it in general, with internships, and the Sky Academy. One of our Android devs is an intern, who won a placement at Sky.  :y

But for iOS we need a senior dev to fill a gap, there has been a distinct lack of talent available. We've had some CV's through but just no way near what we need. It's a shame but the best CV's we have had are all non UK origin.

I think it was one of the Daves on the news the other night, "Of course,  fluent English is a must if working in the public sector". ;D So how about the private sector ???  some the operators I bump into can barely speak the lingo & that`s why I can fluently swear in Polish :y
