What a prat!
« on: 21 May 2014, 10:38:48 »

Driving home today the coolant level warning comes on - with the other symptoms since my HG change I was thinking the worst.

Upon looking under the bonnet it seems I've been driving around with the expansion cap off for a few days! Luckily it was still balanced under the bonnet.

You're not the first, and you'll not be the last ;D

Just be glad that you didn't need to buy a new cap :y

It's even worse when you leave the oil filler cap off.
Although the extra mess might not be particularly noticeable on an Omega.

You'd be surprised at just how much oil can spit out of the dipstick hole..............apparently.   :-[

It was on my Capri 3.0S many years ago::)

There are 2 types of Omega Owners.

Those that have left the coolant cap off before driving away, and those who lie about never having done it :y

I just about remember doing that years ago in a Mini, think it overheated?? long time ago, but do remember buying a new cap, to get me away, only to find the original cap a few days later in the engine bay......... :-[ :D :D

I once forgot to put the oil filler cap back on the MR2 .. it managed one and a half days commuting before I realised when I saw smoke coming out of the engine bay behind me.  There was a puddle of oil on the exhaust heat shield :-[  I reckon that was pretty close to going up in smoke..

I dropped the filler cap on the Omega once, too.. never did get it back - fortunately this time I had another car to nip to the dealer and get a replacement in ;D

Oh yes and left the coolant bottle cap off on my Renault 19 16v years ago, and only realised when whisps of steam started coming out from the bonnet. Still drove home (from McDonalds ;D), filled it with water and it was fine for years after.

Starting to think this might be evidence of a slight memory problem though! ;D

I think the only car I've left a cap off was the oil cap on my Ital. Fortunately, it had a long pipe under it, right down to the bottom of the block, so there was no spray of oil. Just noticed it was idling a little lumpy at the end of a 120 mile motorway journey, due to the extra air through the crankcase breathers.

I've left off the header tank cap a couple of times. It's fine as long as I am on the move, but when I stop and turn my back it boils and expels half its coolant on the golf club car park. Friends rush to find me, tell me my car is leaking. I imagine you all find this.
