It is about time I changed mine but where is the best place to drain out the old? Nothing seems accessible.

Make a mess then use couple pieces of hose pipe to extend the pipes,or empty the pas tank with a oil syphon.

Thanks, but that will only get about 1/3 of a litre of fluid out. According to Mr Haynes, the entire system takes 1.2 litres

Ideally remove the return pipe to the reservoir to a receptacle , run the engine so the old fluid is pumped out, while filling with new fluid to avoid it drawing air. Engine off when the fluid runs clearer. An assistant may be needed to turn the steering and activate the pass pump.

But. The omega engine bay does not easily lend itself to this procedure, as the return pipe is not accessible, and there's certainly no room for a receptacle. Plus the reservoir needs to be emptied and the return spigot blocked to stop the new fluid flowing out.

Its a right fiddle, to say the least.


In fact I wonder if there's another point to access the pas fluid pipes under the car...?

I just extracted what was in the reservoir, filled it with clean, put the car on axle stands and started it up, turned the wheel lock to lock a number of times, emptied the reservoir, filled it with clean.... and on and on...

Ran clean after a while but obviously uses a lot of DEX II...

As Chris says, it's a faff trying to run pipes from the system on the Omega.

On mine is was just a U shaped tube just in the gap behind the grille/in front of the a/c condenser.

I raised the front wheels and then sucked all the fluid out of the reservoir using a syringe. I then disconnected the return pipe from the reservoir and squeezed in a short piece of hose leading to a container under the car. I blocked off the return stub on the reservoir and re-filled the reservoir with clean fluid and started the engine. Glug-glug the reservoir overflowed. Horrible mess. So a switched off, fitted the reservoir cap and tried again. This time fluid squirted through the cap. No way was this going to work.

So I re-fitted the return pipe to the reservoir, sucked out the fluid, re-filled with new, started engine and turned the wheel from side to side a few times. Turned engine off, sucked out fluid again etc. By the time I had washed through 2 litres of Dex 2, the fluid had gone from muddy brown to clear red. Job done.

I keep meaning to do this job on the 2.2, as the PAS smells very burnt and it's only ever had one top up in 171k 

Good idea on syphone, think I'll get a cheapy eBay one and do method suggested here of just drain re-fill, turn wheel, drain re-fill ect.
