tv packages
« on: 30 May 2014, 00:49:04 »

At the moment paying probably too much for my tv phone and broadband.

Thinking of down sizing, broadband is a must, phone hardly gets used, and the tv tends to get used for seperate packages like netflix which er indoors coughs for.

Most in the house are sick of adverts and tend to watch computer tv or netflix and if the do watch regular tv, the channels are on freeview anyway.

All in all thinking of binning phone and tv and getting a gadget to watch netflix and alike.

Any suggestions?

Even if you get rid of the tv you will need a licence to watch the tv as it is broadcast, unless you watch the programes as they have been broadcast. Eg eastenders on i player  :y
and before the i know your wrong shout. I didn't have a tv or a licence for 6 years, and never had an issue doing it this way.  :)

Catch-ups probably do not need one, and live TV probably does. Best to check with them first, though :)

You'll need a phone line for broadband (unless you have cable TV), unless you're planning purely mobile (and I imagine most mobile offerings will soon get "managed" if you're streaming lots of video), so I doubt there are many saving there. I believe most providers charge in the region of £15 a month for the phone line.

I believe most broadband packages (excluding initial offers) are in the same sort of region - £15ish.

So, you're likely to be paying £30 for phone/broadband (though look out for special, new customer offers), so you need to make the call if the extra above this you are paying for the telly bit is worth it :)

Sky standard broadband is £7.50 a month. You get free evening and weekend calls and the line rental is about the same as everyone else. I find the low fat broadband very adequate for all of our connected devices and for downloading catch-up.

Afterthought. Don't know if sky stand alone bb is £7.50 or whether you have to take a TV package.

Is that only if you have Sky TV? Buggerall info on Sky's website, and I daren't put my phone number in for a check, as buggered if I want them calling every 10 seconds.

You do not need a license to watch catch up, you need a license for as it is being broadcast, eg coronation street at 19.30 yes, watch it at 20.00 on a device other than a tv no.
basically if you have a tv you need a license, for a device,a laptop,iPad etc you don't.

been down every way there is to do this with enforcement from tv licenceing, its a very up hill battle to get the right information, they want everybody to have a license, and if you havnt got one they wont believe you until they vist, even using only cable or satellite broadcast you need a license, :)

That is most definitely incorrect, as non TV devices can receive live TV (via streaming). A licence is definitely required for any live UK broadcasts. Obviously, even if you do not watch it live, a licence is still required if you record a broadcast for later viewing.

The grey area has come in because catch-up services have been envisaged and implemented since the laws were made, and loopholes found.

The problem is, most catch-up services also offer live streaming. How do you enforce that? The law needs tidying up to take account of current technology, and what is possible to police and enforce.

Simple solution would be to cut the beeb free, and do away with the licence fee. £150pa isn't really value, when you consider the vast majority of the tripe they think us retarded public want to watch - if you believe their figures, 1 in 4 adults watch knobenders regularly, and not even I believe the UK population is that desperate to watch dreary, depressing, poorly acted, poor scripted shite.

The flip side, £150pa isn't enough of a saving for the hassle of arguing the point if I didn't have one. We hardly ever watch live TV anyway, so moving away from recording here, and using streaming catch-up services would be easy enough for Mrs TB and I to adapt to, but really ain't worth the hassle of dealing with it.

whilst not wanting to get into a battle over this, i went through all of this with enforcment. Basically a licence is needed to watch as it is broadcast, or if you have a tv(connected or not) for live as being broadcast streaming you need a licence, to watch it on iplayer, or a like on a pc or device you don't,
the key wording is "live broadcast",or "as shown in the tv guide"

remember enforcement have the last word,
