That must have been banging and knocking for ages with the usual multi clonk on start-up and rattle with clutch pressed that you get on a very bad DMF failure

Now you have me wondering if that's the noise the M3 is making... would that rattle sound at all like a tiny jackhammer somewhere under the car? Goes away as soon as the pressure plate starts making contact with the flywheel?

Yes, other classic sign is start it up with the clutch pressed, do you get a short rattle then?

I'm a BMW driver so I'm naturally lazy - the computer takes care of that third pedal business.. ;)

It's an SMG-II so I can make it dis/engage the clutch when started, but I don't know if it starts with the clutch depressed or not.. actually thinking about it the diagnostics tells me the position of the actuator so I can probably check that (and actuate it if it's not already) when starting :y  I'll give that a try at the weekend

Mate at work has one of these. 54 plate Tdi.

He has had it recovered to me after a breakdown

Symptoms, he described a noise like a hamster in a ball. He said it got worse and he turned off the engine.

I've had a very brief look and have determines -

Cam-belt intact and in good shape
No holes in block
Oil level full
No warning lights came on inc no oil pressure lights

Any thoughts? I'm wondering if the dual mass flywheel has failed and somehow is jamming the crank?

Good call James. :y :y :y

New flywheel and clutch kit fitted. Getting the box on single handedly was a struggle I'm shattered. A few bits to do before she can be driven, but she starts and idles lovely :y just thrilled it's not seized :y

I recon the FWD VW diesel is the worst car out there for changing the clutch on, even worse with a DSG

Makes me feel better for doing it :D what would you say is bad about it?

Can't be any worse than likes of Mondeo where the subframe is in the way?
