I have used these people twice now for a new 2.2 radiator (for different cars) & cannot fault the Product or Supplier. If you are reasonably handy with tools it is not a difficult job to DIY :y

It looks like you have it covered, "mickeyboy", but I still think that your garage was the cause of your problem - have you been to them for an explanation? Look for new, bright metal on the engine side of the rad?
Anyway, if all else fails and you cannot get satisfaction from your garage or a suitably-priced new rad, I MIGHT have a possibility for you.
A few years back I had a Carlton estate with overheating problems and after failing to cure them by flushing, etc., bought a new, genuine rad from Vx. It is still buried somewhere in my garage, because the car died before I could fit it.
The Carlton was a 2.2 petrol, and I wonder if it's the same as yours? Does anyone know?
I live in Essex, near Chelmsford, so there are logistic problems too in getting it to you, but maybe it's worth thinking about?

Ron.

sorry got that wrong the rad cost  £148.00 without labour charge, I am sure that you can get a lot cheaper than that.
