windscreen cracked!!!
« on: 26 June 2014, 17:53:24 »

Help!

My windscreen cracked while going over the little tiny ramps which are x10 worse than speed bumps on the saddleworth junction. My windscreen was cracked anyway and passed the mot a few days ago but its now cracked top to bottom on the drivers side.

I literally have no money so can a scrapyard windscreen be used? What is involved if this can be done.

If this cannot be done, what's the cheapest place to bug and fit one.

I have TPFT insurance so have no windscreen cover 😭😭

Thank you for your help

By the way its still driveable so can I just leave it? What would be the consequences?

Thank you again

It may last a while, but more likely it will go bang at the most opportune moment.  I'm not an expert on replacing windscreens in "modern" cars, but they are bonded contributing to the rigidity of the shell, so an incorrectly fitted one could have bad consequences.

Don't know best place to get a cheapo, but do have it professionally fitted imo ;)

Before you go any further, you should price up a new screen. Ask local companies, not the nationals, and tell them you're paying.
Used, bonded in screens are difficult. First you have to find one. Windscreens are not easy to remove without breaking them. Then you have to clean off all the old sealant.
If you manage all that, you then have to find someone who is able and prepared to fit it.

Put all that together, and any savings you may make by using a secondhand screen are going to be small and outweighed by the hassle.

where you at mate. you can still drive it and it wont go bang. you can get stopped by the police if its in your vision, what I would suggest is telling them you just got hit and your taking it home to get replaced.

when you do get it replaced check they refit the bottom trim properly

Yep its still driveable, but a cracked screen can go bang, particularly if you hit a pothole etc. - had it happen to me a couple of years back.  PITA driving it back home with most of the screen gone ;)

a front windscreen will not go bang it the cracks might get bigger but it will never go bang. unless your driving something pre 1975 I think that still has the toughened front screen then maybe yes. but all modern cars must have a laminated front screen fitted

Fairly straight forward to remove one from a scrapper, with the right tools (T Bar and wire about a tenner), start gently around the bottom corners, as if its going to go (crack) thats probably where its going go, then work up to the top. Screen will just lift out, light enough for one pair of hands.

Then just find a mobile fitter for beer tokens, budget for 25 - 40 quid to re fit.

Alternatively get a quote to get yours repaired from a Mobile Repairer.

Definatly go with an indipendant fitter instead of one of the big companys. Had major trouble few years back and got an independant to do it. Insurance company could not believe how cheap he was to there "recommened" screen company. and he fitted all new trims as the "recommended" company mullered them all beyond use

defo demand all trims are replaced.

once the screen is replaced remember and check that-

The trims have been changed
The bottom trim sits properly
The interior pillar trims haven't been ripped where it meets windscreen
The dash hasn't been hacked along bottom
The rubber trim around outside is touching body a hairs gap is ok as the rubber will settle anything bigger will cause a wind noise

When you remove the windscreen you'll probably see some rust on the lower edges of windscreen pillar (A Post), the screens always seem to crack from this area and I've often wondered if the rust swelling underneath is the reason for the weakness.

Yea they usually rust under the screen at both corners. Can stress screen and break it if rust swells enough

Thank you for all your help guys, looks like I'm going to have to live with it for quite a while as I'm looking at £130 to £160 😱😱
Its really bad too there's two long cracks an inch apart directly in my field of vision from top to bottom, a massive chip where it spread from on the rear view mirror and a small one near the tax disc.

Definately keeping in mind about the trims.

Just as long as I can keep driving. There dosent seem to be any omegas at Scrapyard's in Oldham. If anyone seems one from the surrounding area give us a shout. Also if you have fitters that are able to fit second hand windscreens let us know please. If the cost outweighs a new one then I won't bother.

Must get down to formulating a good lie for the police 😂

Is it too silly to suggest that you take out additional/supplementary windscreen cover now, then wait a little while and claim on it?
