Redundancy pay, tax free ?
« on: 02 August 2014, 06:36:10 »

looks like i'm being made redundant and i'm due a relatively small dropsy from the firm. I have been informed that it is possible to" role up "my notice pay so that it is paid to me without  tax being taken out and  I take full legal resposibility for any questions HMRC may ask in future, union says this is almost a standard practice in redundancy situations.

My firm claim not to have heard of this and aren't having any of it, despite it having no cost or risk to them in any way ? does this practice exist? it's a real shame as it would make a small figure a medium figure and take quite a bit of pressure off me in the short term  :(

Indeed it is , what I meant was the notice pay element not being taxed

Sorry to hear that...

Notice pay is considered your normal wage and taxed accordingly... Not sure you can take it as part of your redundancy unless the company agree to add it to your redundancy and make it immediate :-\

If this is what you mean then taxable.

Redundancy pay, however, I think first £30000 is tax free.

It's where they don't make you work your notice period and , rather than class it as pay In lieu, it's a form of compensation and is not taxed. From the figures the tax is taking a big chunk  :'(

that's what I understood it to be.

I wish I'd had all of my redundancy pay without Mr Taxman getting his 2 pen'orth ....... or £1000's
