Cam Belt
« on: 15 August 2014, 10:28:12 »

My car has 28K on the clock. Vx in Luton say a cambelt change is due (after 8 years or 80K) and offered to do it for the princely sum of £626 which I declined.

Your opinions please as to when a change is due/desirable and usual third party cost (ie. not Vx). Thanks.

It's due every 4 years or 40k (despite what your Vx dealer told you) and you should be able to get it done for under £300 by one of the forum indies, including parts.

On the interval I believe received wisdom is that the original interval was 4/40, Vx increased it to 8/80 and then dropped it back to 4/40 after having to pay out a bunch of warranty claims.. not all dealers seem to have got the memo.

The wisdom of the forum is every 4 years OR 40k miles. Whichever comes first.

After that you are on borrowed time. The belts deteriorate with time.

There are experts on the forum who do cambelts and time the engine properly. Might be worth looking for someone nearby. It is also fairly easy to do yourself with the OFF video and the appropriate tools (locking kit and a large spanner for the crank.)i

Thanks for replies.
Well, car is 2002 (don't think it has been done before) mileage 28K. Should I get it done now or wait to 40K?

So what your saying is cambelt has not been replaced in the last 12 years, needs doing asap, the last thing you want is to end up with is a broken 28k old engine.  ;)

As suggested, it needs to be done every 4 years, regardless of miles done!

Typical price would be around 100 notes or so for the bits plus fitting which is about 1.5 hours.

I paid £330 at my Vauxhall dealer. This included a new GM water pump. :y

They later said 'they had done their sums wrong'........ ;D ;D ;D

Not just the "wisdom of the forum", the 40K/4 years is as now specified by Vauxhall - although not all their dealers think so ::)

Not usually the belts that go - its the bearings in the tensioner and/or idlers ;)
