Is There Life After A V6?
« on: 19 June 2008, 17:03:56 »

Hi again,Think I just Shot myself in the foot! Had a V6 Estate With 135000 on,and decided to downsize sold it to my brother Got a really nice 98 2.0 CD Estate with only 41000 miles on Loverly Car,but seems GUTLESS after the V6,I have to use it in sport mode to get any Excitement. it has been well maintained with full service history all MOTs back the mileage, and everything works as it should. So the BIG question is..Are there any companys out there making or supplying uprated cams and induction kits, Or is it back to a V6 for me ? :-[ :-/ :/

Just out of interests sake, is it any more economical than the V6 bearing in mind that you have to drive it harder to get any performance from it?

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Just a thought - worth cleaning the breathers, throttle body etc (there is a guide on here).  After I did that on my 2L it drove like a different beast.

I downgraded from an Omega V6 to a 4-Cyl Merc 1.8L, and no it is not good enough...  :(

I must admit I do enjoy the (vastly) improved fuel consumption, but the car is gutless unless pushed hard. If it wasn't for Messers Brown and Livingstone (RIP), I would have stayed with the V6, and will go back to one as soon as they get off our backs with the CO2 emissions....

Hi Alan, It does seem to be doing better on fuel if you believe the MID it says I'm getting 26-32 mpg around town(It's an auto) compared to 19mpg from the V6,The main reason for downsizing was mechanics run screaming from the workshop when they see a V6 Omega coming in,And it always cost £300+ :( Regards.....2tone

Well i think you've answered your own question really...if you want a car that is fast and effortlessy fast at that then its got to be a V6.

If you want a car that's capable of day to day driving all be it much slower then a 2.0/2.2 is the way too go...i guess it boils down to how much you like your wallet and how friendly you are with your local petrol station/Garage.. :y

I drive like an old man so a 2.2 suits me fine....however i do miss the Elite, just not the petrol costs.

My answer is Yes- there is life after a V6.....  but it's probably not worth living.

Stick with the V6 - if you do lots of miles then LPG it.   The V6 economy is not that bad - the autobox kills it in town so if you are concerned find a manual.

I've just returned 35 mpg on a 230 mile run today - mostly at 80+.  Compare this to a mates Audi A (something or other) large barge tractor.  He drives like grandad and gets 44 to the gallon.  When you adjust for the difference between petrol and diesel, I reckon it's about 5mpg different.  that's worth it for the V6 smoothness and power

You wanna try driving an older merc, like a 2.0 without a supercharger MJ, now THATS SLOW!  ;D ;D

4 of us travelled to Plymouth in a C180 Merc estate last year. It was never going to keep up with my 3.0 Omega but, considering there was a 'boot' full of gear I was reasonably impressed with the car as a whole.

You are quite right... I drove a friend's C190... in 1991! Straight from the factory in Stuttgart. Now that was slow....

The Kompressor is fine in terms of BHP, is has around 140+ which is on par with Vx normally-aspired 2.2. But because the car is some 250Kg(!) lighter than the V6 Omega, profrmance in on par with the 2.5/2.6 i.e 9.9 sec (auto).

Well on paper, at least.... the problem with the Kompressor engine is that it is a compete dog under 2,500rpm, and starts pumping the BHP only from 3,000rpm upwards. Not a problem with a manual gearbox, but not so easy with an autobox....

So you learn to drive the thing. You are either cruising leisurely, or flooring it, but there is no in-between. To be fair, the car can move very nicely when pushed hard, it just lacks the low-rev grunt of the torquey V6.

On the plus side, I do enjoy 40+mpg on motorways, and 32mpg average (as opposed to 30mpg and 22mpg on the 2.6 Omega), but even so if it wasn't for this emission madness I would stick to a nice V6.

My old Omega 2.6 was registered in June 2001. Had it been registered 3 months earlier, I would have still had it today...  :(
