What do you think.
« on: 22 June 2008, 11:18:35 »

A good friend of mine was going to buy a 3.0 V6 Omega later this year but a 1988 Jag XJS 5.3 V12 come up for sale and guss what he picks it up next week.
Now i dont know that much about them but he thinks that on a run you could get 26MPG at about 80MPH and a big service once a year is going to cost about £250.

It looks like a nice car but it is going to be a money pit.

Garage clear out in March 2011 and I will have a large amount of omega parts going very cheap.

Should this have said joke in the titele.

I understand the principle of the more powerfull the engine the less work asit can achieve it at lower revs.

My Pontiac for example would not drop into 3rd untill it was doing 56 mph and at 60 mph was doing 1500 rpm in 3rd and the best I ever managed on a run of 60/70 mph was 22 mpg, and that was a V8

I am not saying it's impossible, just dont thinks its that realistic on an ageing engine.

A big service for £250    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Its going to be his second car and he thinks he will only do about 4000 miles a year in it and due to this he thinks that £600 a year for tyres and service etc would be fine. I have just spent £700 on a service and mot for my 3.0 V6 elite
The guy he is buying it from knows how to sell a car.

It must be nice on his planet...!!  :o :o :o :o

Just changing all 12 plugs is quite a feat... I'd be willing to bet the 2 nearest the bulkhead haven't been changed in a while!!! Then there's the inboard rear discs.... God, I'm going to have nightmares again from the last one of those I worked on!!!  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

If he's happy then good luck. But nothing is cheap and even less is easy to fix!!

Not an XJS fan. Love the XJ's. I had a 4.2 sov daimler many years ago, same time as a mate had a 5.3 V12 both autos. Loved 'em but never again. A 2.5 Mig would see 'em off, even an auto.
They did look a treat when all polished up with the chrome etc. I doubt i'll have another one, less room inside than a Mondeo but there's something about them......... ::)
