So (one for Mark's DTM, really) these swirl flap things are basically Toyota T-VIS from 1983? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-VIS

Apologies for the departure from the issue at hand! :)

Pretty much yes, in reality on the diesels they don't fully block the air flow. :y

And thankfully on the DTi (as the 2.0 and 2.2 DTi have them also) and  CDTi engines they do not get ingested like the ones on the BMW's!

Update diagnostic threw up  loads of codes then cleared to show up air mass flow no reading at all, O2 sensor disconnected car started running with blowing and loud due to O2 removed.

Only experience I had was a 2.2 signum that would die when warmed up and not restart until cooled down, fuel pressure regulator was the culprit. Orrible car it was anyway and smelt of doggies

I can confirm, even on that 'orrible 2.0DTi, accidentally leaving the swirl flaps actuated does turn it into a bag of nails above 2000rpm...  :-[

it will do my one was throwing up everything from air mass flow to gearbox failure...until it was put onto a tech 2 that was..you need to get the car onto a tech 2 and also measure the flow of fuel to the rail (from the pump valve is fitted to the side of the conti pump)...also the Siemens pump was the pump that was giving the most problem so Vauxhall stopped using it in favour of the continental unit

Update got the car back after towing in undrivable, p0100 code reoccurred after clearing codes, so new Seimans MAF , o2 sensor removed to reveal blocked so drop exhaust clear blockage. All in £168 = charge battery, diognostic test £30, new Siemans MAF £££ drop exhaust clear blockage
