Handbrake cable
« on: 21 September 2014, 18:40:39 »

Hi
While attempting to adjust my handbrake cable yesterday(again) I slackened all of as per guide then did star adjusters as per guide but when you pull lever up to apply brake only one side bites, looking at the adjuster mechanism one side is much further back than the other do I need to let cable go really slack on both sides then adjust up both star adjusters?
Anyone any ideas?

I am sure other more suitable qualified comments will come, but I recall when I did mine that the star adjuster turns the opposite way on the respective sides (assuming they were installed correctly !!!  ;D) .

Mine worked, but the only one to have the hub off was Fritz when the car was built as rear hubs never been off or touched since my migs birth :y

Hope you get it sorted but there are a few good pics and guides about on the OOF as I recall.  :y

Thanks Doc

The adjusters are not the issue though, I moved the adjusters until the wheel locked then backed it off a little, its just when I tightened cable up then pulled lever up only the one side bites, tried it a few times but no joy.
Thanks for input anyway.

Might worth checking where the cable is connected to the rear undercarriage. Had this on my monza, and the cable had slipped through a metal jacket that was supposed to hold it on one of the sides. Bent the metal a bit and slipped the wire into place and all was ok. Sorry for the bad explanation. Dont know all the part names in english:p

It's important that the scissors shoe spreaders are free to do their duty, also that the cable is not rusted solid to the lever.  Have a mate pull up the handbrake lever, watch that both levers at the handbrake backplate are pulled forward similarly. Remember the MOT tester standing under the car on the ramp asking his mate in the cabin to  pull the 'handbrake on off, on off'.

Unless the handbrake has been rebuilt recently, something is probably stuck on a 12 year old car.

I have always found those adjusters bloody awful and so inaccurate, and that is not only on Omega's but all the cars I have ever worked on from my A40 on, especially when it was drum brakes all round! ;D ;D ;D

Is it beyond the wisdom of man or woman to come up with a far more precise device to finely adjust for things like handbrake shoes? ??? ???

Not quite James, it was pulling through a little but mainly not working and cables out of sync because drivers side cable is seized!
Found this after stripping everything down, adjusters spreader mechanism all working OK but cable not moving, tried to persuade it to move but no chance so new cables me thinks.

Replacement is cheap enough but fitting the front end is fiddly on the ground...
