Islamic State militants
« on: 24 September 2014, 22:10:58 »

Anyone else wondering just how this will play out?

My own view is the problem is here for a long time because it has funding.

On a side note how does a country deal with its own nationals who go off to fight for the cause (one mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist) and then comes back home?  Big problem in countries like France.

The irony of Putin saying we mustn't fight Assad and then now he turns out to have been right isn't lost on me.

Putin funding IS. ...and other similar factions, directly or indirectly, through/via Syria.

Just me?

Nothing if not cyniacal ;D

I am in favour of another Crusade to put an end to this disease, but only if the UN sacnctions it. Syria not complaining about US led military strikes on Syrian soil is not the same as UN endorsement. If they have learnt anything from GeoffW and Smarmy Arseface, then surely it is that UN endorsement must be unequivocal :-\

My own view is the problem is here for a long time because it has funding.

Initially funded by many sources (including Zestern powers) it is now self-sufficient through the sale of oil from captured oil fields.  Hence the targetting of the refineries to reduce their income.  No $ = no bullets, propoganda, food, etc, etc....

Militarily they are very vulnerable.  Just one night of bombing raids from a small handul of aircraft has caused serious distruption to IS.  Imagine a bombing campagne on the scale of Gulf War 1 or 2 followed up by soldiers to mop up the rest!  The added bonus is that there is less grey with IS and less civilian population to hide amoungst so reduced collateral damage and greater tactical freedom.

So will they be around for long?  I think not.  Once the decision is made to properly intervene it will be very short-lived.  The problem is that there are a number of elections due soon so expect intervention to be more forthcoming once they are done with (note: ours is next year!)

ISIS is a pion used for one or more reasons.. what will some powers achieve is the question..

will they re-draw the borders in middle east ?   thats what I'm curious for..

I dont know, but my client's cement plant, which sits next to that border, is in the process of being destroyed by IS.

Thankfully it was evacuated last week so no lives at risk :y
