kiddie ailments
« on: 25 June 2008, 19:18:21 »

My littl'un has been off colour for the last few days, really high fever over the weekend  :(  Generally in a foul grizzly mood too.

Anyway -- today he comes out in a blotchy rash. Doc says it's slapped cheek disease.  Have I been on a different planet all my life  ::) Have three other kids ( all grown now) and have never heard of slapped cheek disease !!!!!

Just googled it and it seems it's pretty common  :-[

Apparently it's erythema infectiosum  ( which to me translates as infectious rash !!)

 :o Well......one lives and learns, Hoody-Count ;)

I have lived through 5 nephews and have never heard of "Slapped Cheek Disease!"  :-/

;D `Though when I was a kiddie my mother always used to comment that I oft`would have a "face like a slapped arse" whenever I was miserably-ill. ;D

Our eldest daughter had it... after Mrs taking her to see three different doctors as they did not know what it was we took her to see a specialist.
She knew exactly what it was as soon as she saw it, she said the common name for it was "Slapped Face" something but then gave the proper name for it which I can't remember, then showed us pictures of what more serious cases looked like....... which didn't look nice at all,  but she said it will go as quick as it came........... which it did :y

Glad I am not alone!

The rash is going down now (but I am told it could flare up again) so hopefully he will be his normal cheerful self soon.

I had never heard of it until my eldest (and then we all) had it.

One piece of warning, keep away from anyone pregnant!

It DOES cause miscarriage :(

i know my son had a rash yrs ago, we told him it was from eating too much tomato ketchup, he used to get through a bottle every 3 days, was a terrible rash he had, he cried 1 day as he thought it was forever, was so sad for him. dont know if its the same 1 you are descroibing, probably is. well it did eventually go after a few months

So I have learnt --- unfortunately, it's one of these ailments that you don't know the child has got until the rash finally comes out -- when that happens he or she is no longer infectious !!!

Luckily we have not been near any pregnant ladies ( as far as I am aware!)

You would think something with that sort of repercussion would be more widely known about !

How awful :( I have never heard of this and given it's effects on an unborn I am surprised so many of us have not :o
