This is a tough one . . . . . .
« on: 03 November 2014, 22:14:05 »

A family with a disabled daughter takes her out for a meal. She is excited, and noisy as a result of her disability. Other diners complain or at least feel that their dining experience is not good. (Harvester = "Dining Experience" Hmmmmm ?)

Restaurant staff ask the family with the disabled member to leave.

So, of course the family should be able to go out for a meal. However, maybe a couple having "romantic dinner for two" or whatever may not like things.

The restuarant staff are in a tough spot, with possibly two lots of unhappy customers. The real answer of course is to have staff that are smart enough to be able to eyeball a situation at a very early stage and arrange things accordingly. Like, notice a disabled guest and seat them differently, Ah ! but then that is discriminatory ! However the alternative turned out worse. Also, I doubt that many Harvester staff have the nouse to be able to do that . . . the term "Between A Rock and a hard place" springs to mind. The manager really got this wrong, in several ways.

Words fail me.  >:(

One person's "Dining experience" - another person's hand they've been dealt - for life. >:(

I'll be the only honest person here then!  ;D

I have a severely disabled relation who can be a handful at times.  This is usually at the 'worst' times, like when eating in a restaurant, or explaining to a cab driver that she isn't completely pissed, but not able to stand or speak as most of us can.

I've been to Restaurants with her and the rest of the family, and I can very much understand the wishes of others that she wasn't there.  Afterall, she is not 'normal'.  Without any malice or any anger, she can come across as aggressive and unruly.  There is nothing her parents can do about it.

If this was a story about a screaming brat from a family of 12 who shouted 'MOTHERoppsER' every 2 minutes, peoples opinions would be different, I'm sure.

Furthermore.........

It's like when you have a teething baby which is likely to cry, or a incontinent elder which needs the toilet every two minutes.

When at a Wedding, you sit at the back, so baby can go outside and not disrupt the Nuptials, in a Restaurant, you ask for a table near to the toilets.

Common sense?

As Rog said, difficult one. I feel for the family, but I wouldn't want my meal out ruined either.
