Heavy steering
« on: 04 November 2014, 19:31:37 »

My pfl has started with heavy steering - I've noticed a bit of dampness around the reservoir ?

What could this be ? - the level looks OK

Intermittent heavy at speed, servo tronic relay.

Heavy at low speed, while parking manouvering, tired pas pump.

Most reservoirs leak slightly. Nothing unusual there.

Press the throttle until you attain around 3k revs. then rotate the wheel.  As you are rotating, take your foot off the pedal.  If it stiffens (ooh err Missus), then the pump it knackered.  If it stays the same, heavy, look elsewhere first.

Didn't know there was one for the pas - I'll have a look at that first then do the test with revs  :y

I'd guess the fuse would be for the pas pressure circuit but don't quote me on that

it has a relay in it too (as Gixer says) ..... all to do with the speed sensitive side of your power steering

Looked for fuse #14 - I assume it's the batch under the steering wheel but appears to be heated seat.

Or is it one of the engine bay ?

Mine was the other way around, heavy at parking, fairly normal on the move, no variable assistance, it goes back to a default mode. Turned out the big red/orange relay looking box ( left kick panel under glove box) had been full of water at some time. Changed for a used one and hey presto nice and light when parking getting heavier at speed. Easiest way to find out is to pull the red control unit and see if it makes any difference. I don't think my diesel has one!! :'( :'(

DTi Elite's have Servotronic, The red relay was under the steering column on mine rather than behind the glovebox.
