P0420 fault code
« on: 06 November 2014, 10:35:47 »

Engine light is on and following codes are flashing

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

I have a leak between the mid exhaust box and the back box could this effect the above codes?

Nope, pre-cats are getting tired.

The fix is to relocate the second O2 sensor to behind the main cat

ok so just a coincidence then with the leak ive had a few weeks.

re moving sensor will the engine light clear after the set amount of clean starts or will it need clearing?

Pre cats will get more and more tired as the miles roll by. So the light will stay on for longer and longer periods. Until it's on permenamtly.

Keeping them hot is key, to a point. So lots of pootling in traffic will usually see the light on more often than a motorway journey. And more in turn than ragging the t*ts off it.

What ever you do though, do NOT be tempted to replace the enire cat. See the guide on a permenant fix, muuuuch cheaper. :y
