Tablet?
« on: 11 November 2014, 17:39:06 »

Can anyone recommend a simple e-mail/internet tablet? SWMBO has an iPad which neither of us like, as it has a mind of its own, and is certainly not intuitively user friendly, like a PC for example. So I would like to get her something easier to use for Crimbo. I had a look in PC World today, but they have so many, and the Assistants(?) are somewhat less than helpful.

TIA

Pfffff, tricky Shak. I think you'll struggle to get something simpler on a tablet. Presumably it's the touch screen that's causing issues? In which case you don't want a tablet at all.

But I guess it's important to understand exactly what the issues is first?

I was thinking of something with a removable keyboard, if that helps. My wife uses it almost exclusively for e-mail, and I ocsnly attempt to use it for internet access if we are away. :-\ :-\ :-\

I guess the main problems with it are that it is only used occasionally, so we never really get properly used to it, even though we've had it 3 or 4 years, but it really does have a mind of its own, e-mails disappear before you send them, web pages disappear as you look at them, so basically we want something that only does things when you specifically ask it to, like a PC. :y

If you prefer windows 8 then try out the Nokia Lumia 2520 and power keyboard/case - basically a tablet detachable from a keyboard which includes 2 USB slots. These things were mega money a year ago - just bought the tablet for £217 on eBay brand new and £100 for keyboard from John Lewis.

I also have an ipad but we get issues with Microsoft Office documents etc. the Nokia is effectively a full blown laptop but offering a lightweight tablet without paying surface pro prices.

Sounds like it needs some house keeping. I take it your shutting down all the opened apps now and then?

Try a reset. Clear the history and cache. Remove any old unused apps to give the minimal ram a chance and don't upgrade to ios8 or it will struggle.

And maybe a blutooth keyboard will help. Although there tends to be a bit of a delay between key presses and the screen responding if the ipad is struggling.

I am pleased with my Sony Tablet S... Has an optional wireless key board and desk stand, neither of which I use a great deal, but do make for a mini laptop effect :y

Should add it has survived over two years abuse, including a couple of trips down the stairs ::)

Not exactly cheap, but neither is the gaypad :-\

It's effectively a tablet with a wireless key board. Which is exactly as suggested earlier, btw. ;)

We've done a reset before, we don't use any of the Apps, so I guess we could remove most of them which arrived with it courtesy of daughter. I'll try the history and cache, but as this has always been the same, I am not hopeful. :-\

Once they start messing around, you've had it. Mine is an old iPad 2, iOS 8 knackered it.

Having said that, you'll be hard pushed to find a better tablet than an iPad. Buy a modern one, if you feel that you must have one.
I reckon I could get by with my galaxy 4 smartphone if I had to.

My old ipad 1 stops at version 5.1 I think. It's the most up to date for that model anyway, and yes it was struggling, but I did revive it a bit, by deleting all the unused apps. And all the big apps, like Google Earth and Google maps which. Really upset it when open.

It's much much better. :y

Battey doctor has some diags apps that help too.

iPad is the easiest, most stable and most intuitive of all the tablets TBH. Even the most hardened Android fan would have to agree.

I personally do not get on with tablets either, preferring a full blown Win7 laptop. Despite its age, it will boot from cold in 11s, so for me tablets hold no advantage, and are too compromised.
