Thanks for all that Chris, I'm sure it will all be useful. Whether it will teach it to be obedient and not go off on its own, I'll reserve judgement.

Shak I can assure you it won't do anything the user hasn't told it do by touching the screen.
As said, ALL TABLETS have a touch screen. ALL of them. The definition of a tablet is that it does not have a hardware key board. Therefor the only way to input commands is via the touch screen.
If you want a keyboard, either buy or borrow a bluetooth wireless keyboard to go with the ipad, or consider a lap top type device....
Netbooks are cheap, but only come with one gig of ram(expandable memory that the system needs to run), if it doesn't have 2gig and most don't , all netbooks need 2gig, so tech support is needed at extra expense to add a 1 gig memory stick will be required, it is not straightforward for the user.
So, the ipad IS the best device for you. You just need to get used to it, and the touch screen and being carfefull how you handle it, and only touch the aluminated section of the glass display area when you want to command the device. The black surround or "bezel" is not touch sensative.
Practice practice
I was using screens when I was flying which worked very well, you touched an icon button alongside its description, and it did exactly as advertised, which is certainly not always the case with this iPad.
As it is not mine, I very rarely use it, but I have an iPhone4 which is equally intransigent, and don't even start me on iTunes, which when I updated it onetime on my PC, completely screwed up Windows such that I had to restore the whole system, including Windows, from backup. >:So I guess I am basically anti-Apple products in general.
Nevertheless, I have deleted most of the Apps, the history and cache on the iPad, and will see how it goes. Thanks again.
PS You may well ask why we have these (Cr)Apple products, we 'inherit' them from my daughter who always has the latest Apple product, and as much as I complain to her about them, she still insists on giving the 'old' ones to us, generally saying we will find them easier to use! Wrong! I have an iPhone 5 sitting on my desk which I will probably never use, as I'm hoping she has forgotten that she was going to get it unlocked!
