In order to delete apps, that you no longer use. Press the main menu "square" button once, to show the main screen and all the app icons. Press and hold any one of the apps. Again they will start to jiggle, and an " x " will apear in the corner of each app. Touch the x and the option to delete the app, and all its info, will appear. You can then delete the app.

Don't worry if you delete something that you need again later, as you can download it again from the store for free as you have already paid for it.

In fact, it's best to use the store as a cloud service. Ie, only keep apps on the device that you use regularly. Delete and downloading other less used apps as when you need them.

Built in apps like email and Safari etc, can not be deleted. So don't worry too much  about getting trigger happy. Delete away.

Here is The user guide for ipad 1 or ios5.
Click the link and it will open. Top right will be an option to open in iBooks. Cluck that. Then the pdf guide will open in iBooks and it will be stored there. You can then view it anytime without needing a web connectio.

If "open in iBooks" is not visible, touch the top right hand corner of the pdf window, below the browser bar, and the option will re appear.

Thanks for all that Chris, I'm sure it will all be useful. Whether it will teach it to be obedient and not go off on its own, I'll reserve judgement. :y :y :y

Further, I would suggest reading some reviews on which tablets are best for you. As there is a very real danger of additional expense for a worse experience.

;D Shak I can assure you it won't do anything the user hasn't told it do by touching the screen. ;D

As said, ALL TABLETS have a touch screen. ALL of them. The definition of a tablet is that it does not have a hardware key board. Therefor the only way to input commands is via the touch screen.
If you want a keyboard, either buy or borrow a bluetooth wireless keyboard to go with the ipad, or consider a lap top type device....
Netbooks are cheap, but only come with one gig of ram(expandable memory that the system needs to run), if it doesn't have 2gig and most don't , all netbooks need 2gig, so tech support is needed at extra expense to add a 1 gig memory stick will be required, it is not straightforward for the user.

So, the ipad IS the best device for you. You just need to get used to it, and the touch screen and being carfefull how you handle it, and only touch the aluminated section of the glass display area when you want to command the device. The black surround or "bezel" is not touch sensative.

Practice practice :y

I was using screens when I was flying which worked very well, you touched an icon button alongside its description, and it did exactly as advertised, which is certainly not always the case with this iPad.

As it is not mine, I very rarely use it, but I have an iPhone4 which is equally intransigent, and don't even start me on iTunes, which when I updated it onetime on my PC, completely screwed up Windows such that I had to restore the whole system, including Windows, from backup. >:So I guess I am basically anti-Apple products in general.

Nevertheless, I have deleted most of the Apps, the history and cache on the iPad, and will see how it goes. Thanks again.

PS You may well ask why we have these (Cr)Apple products, we 'inherit' them from my daughter who always has the latest Apple product, and as much as I complain to her about them, she still insists on giving the 'old' ones to us, generally saying we will find them easier to use! Wrong! I have an iPhone 5 sitting on my desk which I will probably never use, as I'm hoping she has forgotten that she was going to get it unlocked! :y :y :y

Its that bloody old, it never booted Windows 7 when it was taken out of the box ;D

But I can buy a decent laptop, and whatever else I need to achieve a sub 10s boot for less than the price of the cheapest full size iPad, and cheaper than a mid range iPad Mini.

I know what I'd rather have.

Yeah but here's the thing. Ready? Now listen carefully....

ITS NOT FOR YOU. ITS FOR MRS SHAKENG. :y   ::)

Shackeng is more than capable of making a PC run well.  Clearly the tablet format isn't working too great in the Shackeng household, and he is considering replacing for something else.

If an iPad is proving difficult to use, I'd bet Android is going to be more frustrating.

A fast laptop, sub £400, is a viable option, irrespective on your views about Microsoft and PCs ;)

I refer the honourable gentleman to the original post. "Difficult to use, not intuitive like a PC". If a gayPad is not intuitive, but a PC is, then a PC is the answer. Not a gayPad, which the OP has tried, and cannot get on with.

Bloody single minded people, they all think everyone else should not take a different point of view ;D

Can anyone recommend a simple e-mail/internet tablet? SWMBO has an iPad which neither of us like, as it has a mind of its own, and is certainly not intuitively user friendly, like a PC for example. So I would like to get her something easier to use for Crimbo. I had a look in PC World today, but they have so many, and the Assistants(?) are somewhat less than helpful.

TIA

Selective bloody hearing again. ;D

Indeed, several potential alternatives have been suggested... and none of them crapple :D
