Nice thought but I'd still feel guilty.

Now we would like to have some data for ocsnl, out of wifi range, use. I have spent considerable time talking to various mobile network providers, but they all only offer data 'bundles' which expire after 30 days, unless you are on a contract. We are very unlikely to use it for anything other than e-mail, Face-time with family, and probably reading the paper, for which I have a subscription for the paper version, and have discovered it is therefore free on the iPad! Also possibly the occasional on-line check-in for flights. I guess this is unlikely to use much data, so am unwilling to buy a great lump, or have a contract.
I have a Vodafone contract which gives me 250Mb of data per month, which I have never used, VF told me in a phone call that I can use this data as a 'hotspot' for the iPad, which would be a solution, however, a guy in the VF shop today tells me this is called 'tethering', and neither VF or any other network supports it.

Help!!!

What phone have you got?  If VF say you can tether your 250Mb per month, and if the phone can do it, then its doable ;)

On the way to Bicester an hour ago, I was having to talk Mrs TB how to set up her iPhone 6 as a Personal Hotspot, so she could tether her Kindle to it to download a book on the way to the shops.  Not entirely sure why she couldn't wait until we got home, but that's women for you...

OK, as Vodafone are an official Apple carrier, should be possible **IF** your contract allows tethering.

Go to Iphone's Settings page. If Personal Hotspot is not near the top, go to Cellular, and you should see it there?

Just had a phone conversation with Chris, Jaime. The personal hotspot option is greyed out.... :(

OK, needs to chat to VF to ask why.  As said, its possible the contract he has doesn't allow tethering.

Sounds like VF are being tighter than a ducks tight bits :-\

I mean, 250mb is 0.1% of my monthly data use :-[, so hardly worth preventing tethering unless it's designed to stop people from racking up £100 data bills...

My Tmobile contract is unlimited data, and allows tethering, and quite frankly I rip the arse out of both ;D

OK daughter sorted it with a google search.

On iPhone5. Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings.

Having done so, Personal Hotspot is now available. I have yet to use it, as I still want clarification from VF regarding the statement "We don't allow tethering".

Many thanks for all your help, especially Steve.

Happy New Year.

Ah, sounds like somebody had installed a cellular profile then, which blocks out carrier file.

I'm not sure what all that means. The phone is an iPhone 5S 'inherited' from my daughter, which was on O2 with her, and was unlocked so that I could use it with VF, if that sheds any light. ???
