Need to tax some in a week, so thought could be nice to spread the cost. However a lot searching has brought up sod all on how it all works.

So assuming it must be part of th check out procedure either on line or bt the phone (assuming cant be done at the PO).

Anyone doing it by DDM, is the above correct, 12 months only or 6 months possible?, and what happens if you sell the car guessing no auto refund?, so do they just cancel the DDM and stop charging you??

Paying vehicle tax by Direct Debit

From 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office®), Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax. This will be available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014:
•annually
•6 monthly
•monthly (12 months tax paid for on a monthly basis)

Tax will be automatically renewed and the Direct Debit payments will continue to be taken providing an MOT is in place at the point of tax renewal. Payments will continue automatically until you tell DVLA to stop taking them or you cancel the Direct Debit with your bank. Valid insurance should also be in place for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland.

The Direct Debit will be cancelled and payments automatically stopped when you tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle, or the vehicle has been taken off the road and a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) has been made. The Direct Debit will also be cancelled if a vehicle is scrapped by an ATF, exported or if the tax class of the vehicle is changed to an exempt duty tax class.

What gets me is that most companies offer discounts to pay by DD. Car tax costs more to do DD unless the one year option.

You say that Terbs, but they were already charging 10% on top of 6 months tax. Now the extra is 5%, and lets be honest, £21 a month per Omega is alot easier to deal with than a single hit of either £165/£290 per car

Also, the convenience of going to look at a car on a Sunday morning and being able to tax it instantly (provided it has an MoT) is surely worth something

Not needing insurance does seem a bit backwards, but that said, the driver was/is always responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is fully road legal, including insurance... so if you/me/anyone chooses to use a car on the road without insurance, then you can reasonably expect a snotty letter/court summons and rightly so imho

Yep. Paid by DD. Piece of piss.

All the details are on the reminder. Go from there. 5 steps iirc. It's almost instant. Email confirmation. No letters no paperwork(apart from the reminder of course). Easy.

Did I mention...it's easy?
