Hi all...

Don't know if anyone is experienced in these matters, but....swmbo has come home tonight after being to see her mum, and has told me her cousin has sadly died.
Here is the interesting bit....he did not leave a will. His parents are dead, and he had no brothers or sisters.
His mother had four brothers or sisters, all now dead.  Not sure of relations on his fathers side, but would imagine all brothers and sisters dead.
One of the brothers was smbbo's dad, sadly dead. Swmbo's mother is still alive.
The next level are cousins. We only know of swmbo and one other cousin on our side, who are alive. Swmbo's brother has passed on too.
There may be cousins on his fathers side, we just don't know.

How far down the line do they go in sorting out who gets what of the poor chap's estate.
We know he had a house in Surrey, and owned a plane.

Sad really as his birthday was due and we had just got him a nice card with an aeroplane on it.

My understanding is that it will all go the the nearest relative, no matter how distant they may be - Think of the TV program Heir Hunters, sorting out old estates, they will go a long way to find them............

The nearest relative alive is my mother-in-law. But she is not 'blood' relation.
Next layer of blood relations is swmbo, and any other cousins.

Without wishing to sound harsh, you would be better served taking professional advice on this, rather than relying on what you may be told on the forum. Having said that, I know that some on here have been through bereavements and had to sort a hell of a lot out themselves. Phil (pscocoa) may be able to help.

Appreciate that, its not us, its mother-in-law who is more concerned. She has had phone calls from officialdom. We just think what will be will be.
Not going to start delving or getting involved.
This will make you laugh....reason mother-in-law is panicking, bless her, is that if she lands up with money, she would lose her housing allowance, etc. Notwithstanding the fact she would be rolling in it. She is 94, dear old soul

Don't you just love them. I hope she cops for a fortune, so she can see out her days in comfort.
Just make sure she is fully aware of what is going on.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with you and your good lady benefitting if that comes about. He was a member of your family, and that's how it works.

Answered all the questions, and it looks like the estate will be split between any cousins.
Christine just said that they are trying to contact her. They have already contacted her cousin. As I said earlier, we don't know how many cousins there are on the fathers side.
Reason for this is because when Chris's dad married Chris's mum, there was a family rift. Her dad came from a wealthy family and her mum was a Devon  country girl. They cut her dad out of everything and did not recognise him for years.
Chris's grandfather used to race at Brooklands, also had an airfield with a fleet of planes. In 1902, Chris's dad was the youngest person ever to fly, when aged 2, he was taken aloft by pioneers, Alcock and Brown. Pictures in the Byfleet news 1902 confirm
After he died, for some reason, the family made contact again, but it was not for long, as they were all aged.
Be interesting to see what happens when the solicitors contact Chris...I'll keep you informed.

PS....it if comes off, I have already told her I want to add another Omega to the collection, a saloon this time
