Learning Guitar
« on: 11 December 2014, 16:52:29 »

I know there are one or two budding guitar players on here , but was wondering if you are self taught  :-\ and how long it took you to learn fully . Thinking of dusting of the electric one in the loft again  :-\ Any tips to learning by yourself  :-\ Lead guitar  :)

Been playing for 50 y . . . a lot of years now . . .  ::)

Basicly self taught :'( :y   but with todays technology  & much better quality cheaper guitars  it should be so much easierfor you.

Get yourself a small combo amp  with a CD input so you play along to backing tracks from your phone or tablet. . .  10 /15 watts will be plenty .

Headphone socket is handy as well  . . .  to keep the peace indoors :y :y A small cheap electronic tuner is essential & tune

to standard concert pitch of   A   440 Hz  Also light gauge strings  9-42 help novice players . . . easier to  fret.

Search out the 1000's of guitar teaching vids on You Tube . These range from absolute beginner to pro and cover what ever style of music you want to pursue. Load the lessons & tracks to your device

Also Ultimate Guitar Tab is another good  free site to give you chords & melody lines for 1000's of songs.

But You Tube is the secret weapon  . .  it shows you exactly what to do with your fingers .

Have fun . .  . after all these years I'm still learning  . . .  it just goes on & on

Two words of advice  . .  . Practice & Perciverance

HTH  :y :y

Ah thanks Al  :) I have the amp and headphones .. Basically i stuck with the self learning for a week , got the hang of a few basic chord changes then stopped . Your right about keep practising , just the calluses were a wee bit sore from sliding the strings  ;D Got to dig the amp out of the loft now but i did notice how the amp made my playing sound much better  ;D more of a ring to it  :o

Ps, was that you playing at one of the meetings ?

Guilty m'lud :-[ :-[

When practicing  . . for a better sound    try & get yourself a cheap multi effects unit off flea bay . . . chorus, delay ,reverb, overdrive etc.

Zoom 505  or a line 6 pocket pod   as 2 suggestions  ;)
