Genuine vx gasket flaw from new  ??? Going to look through service record ect to see if mine were replaced . I think they were  :-\

Not necessarily the gasket... could be a block or head defect which affected an entire batch, could have been a duff robot... :-\

If I remember correctly, that's the area of the engine that suffers with heat problems when the engine is pushed past it's design threshold by trying to turbocharge for example. Maybe the cooling system design is marginal in that particular area?

Not convinced its cooling in this case as the rear cylinders get the rad outlet feeding them first.

I half wonder if its water from the scuttle landing on the block lip where the headgasket sits and is eroding from the outside in.

Seems to be more common specifically on 1998 3.0l. Mine, I believe (and will bow to your expertise) is the earlier 3.0l block/heads (although not original heads for the past few years, but no idea what/where they came from, you just happened to find them in your garage IIRC ;D

I wonder if the pattern is very early MFL with 3.0l?

Gaskets been done on both mine a couple years ago  :) No water loss in over a year ive owned it  :y
